Chapter Ten
Gracetown
When Lexi was forced into the boot of Kevinâs car, she heard Hadley frantically calling her name. Even though the two sisters had been fighting an awful lot lately, it reminded Lexi that Hadley still cared for her and it gave her some needed courage. She knew Hadley would find help.
As the roof of the boot slammed shut, and Lexi was engulfed in darkness, she could feel the terror rising in her throat, and she tried not to freak-out. You must find a way out! She told herself as she unclenched her fists and tried to calm down. Lying on her back with her legs bent, Lexi brought her hands up by her head and tried to push the boot open. She groaned and strained with all her strength against the hard surface, her hands aching with the exertion. However, no matter how hard she pushed, it wouldnât budge. The boot was firmly closed.
Lexi tried to think of something else. What else could she do? It was so cramped. She now knew what it felt like to be an animal being smuggled in a tiny box through an airport quarantine. Her heart started to race at the idea, and she soon found herself thinking about the nightmare she had the other night. The one where she had been trapped in a small room, unable to breathe. Lexi started to panic. If only this were a nightmare she could wake up from!
Thumping her hands against the solid roof, Lexi screamed for help until her throat ached. She pummelled her fists and arms against the roof of the boot until there were bruises from her wrists to her elbows. The space inside the car boot was extremely claustrophobic, making her feel as though she were suffocating. The air was stale, and she could smell her own sour sweat. It was also terribly hot in the enclosed space and to make it worse, she desperately needed to pee.
Trying to manoeuvre herself into a more comfortable position, Lexi felt something poking into her leg making her feel even more irritated. As she tried to wiggle away from the hard object, Lexi found herself hitting the back wall of the boot. She placed both arms on either side of her and pushed. It was so tight a space that she couldnât unbend her arms. She couldnât straighten her legs either, and her head was jammed uncomfortably against the back wall. There was no room to move. It was if she were entombed! Clenching her fists, tears of frustration formed in the corners of her eyes and she began screaming again.
After a while, Lexi wiped her eyes and shook her head trying to clear her mind. âGet a hold of yourself,â she muttered through gritted teeth. If she wanted to escape, she had to keep her wits about her. It wasnât doing any good her breaking down. If her nose became blocked from crying, it would only make it more difficult to breathe, and besides, she didnât want to let Kevin or Cindy have the satisfaction of seeing her distressed.
