CHAPTER EIGHT

Childish laughter came clearly from the morning room. Rachel took a steadying breath before opening the door. She had spent the past hour since Stephen had left trying to compose herself, but the veneer of calm was superficial. She only had to remember what had happened for the cracks to appear. How could she have been so foolish as to fall for Stephen's trickery?

Rachel closed her eyes on a wave of humiliation. She knew only too well why she had gone so willingly into Stephen's arms! That was what really scared her. If Stephen carried out his threat to tell Robert's mother about Jamie, then she and Stephen were bound to meet in the coming years.

Rachel didn't think she could cope with constantly coming into contact with Stephen, knowing how he felt about her. There had to be some way to convince him that he was making a mistake. Yet the bitterest thought of all was that Stephen would never know what a huge mistake it really was.

Jamie was lying sprawled on the floor in front of the television, his chin propped on his hand, his blond hair mussed. He looked round when Rachel came in, the sparkle once more back in his eyes. 'Hi, Mum. You should see this, it's brill!'

To Jamie there could be no higher accolade. Rachel felt some of her worry lift as she saw how much better her son was looking. She sat down on the sofa and watched the cartoon characters careering crazily across the screen, smiling as she heard Jamie chuckle at their antics.

'I take it you're feeling a bit better this morning, then?'

Eyes locked to the screen, Jamie nodded. 'Uh-huh. Really itchy, though.' The child looked round as the door opened again and a shy smile crossed his face. 'This is a really funny film.'

'I'm glad you're enjoying it. Mrs Daniels recommended it. Apparently it's her grandson's favourite cartoon video.'

Stephen's voice. Stephen suddenly there in the room behind her! Rachel swung round, her face going ashen as she saw him. Stephen returned her stare levelly yet there was a nerve beating along his jaw, a tautness about his mouth which hinted at the fact that he wasn't nearly as controlled as he first appeared.

Rachel got up unsteadily, her eyes locked to Stephen's face, her body trembling from the shock of seeing him again so soon. She had hoped to have her emotions in check before they met again but suddenly she wondered if there was enough time in the world to guarantee that she could look at Stephen and not recall what had happened between them in the study earlier…

Stephen uttered what might have been a curse, although it was too low to hear clearly. His hand was hard as he grasped Rachel's arm and propelled her towards the door. Rachel opened her mouth to protest then closed it abruptly as Stephen looked pointedly at the child lying on the floor.

Rachel summoned a smile as she saw the frown which creased Jamie's smooth young brow as he looked uncertainly from her to Stephen.
