Podcast Episode 11:

The Predators

In the last few days of her life, Katrin seemed to be surrounded by men, and I can’t help thinking of a shoal of piranhas circling their stricken prey. I’ve met some of them already, while others remain elusive. All were potentially at the party the night she disappeared, and any of them could be the person with whom she was arguing in the tantalising piece of CCTV footage we’ve obtained.

There’s Tony Weaver, the boxing promoter, at whose apartment the party took place. He is adamant he didn’t invite Katrin himself, but he does remember her being there.

There’s the Coughing Man, of course; our mysterious online informant claims that he or she saw Katrin getting into his van at the end of the party, or at least into a vehicle matching that description.

There’s L, the work colleague who might have invited her. We’ve ascertained that he’s out of the country on a long backpacking holiday, but we’re still very keen to speak with him, and to understand his memories of that evening.

Then there’s Jamal, Katrin’s personal trainer, and also Henry Wu, her friend, who were at the party too.

And finally there’s Blake Horowitz. I’ve redacted his name in previous episodes, but now I’ve decided to go public, partly to encourage him to give me his side of the story. He was the project director during Hannibal Heights’ design and construction, and Katrin’s ultimate boss – and Tony Weaver claims he was also in attendance that night.

Yesterday I spoke on the phone with Niamh Kennedy, his ex-wife, who has allowed me to broadcast the recording of our conversation.

‘Hello?’

‘Hi Niamh. This is Elaine Napier from The Frozen Files podcast. I believe you spoke with my associate, Wim Hellendoorn?’

‘Yes, that’s right. He said you wanted to speak to me about Blake.’

‘If you wouldn’t mind. He’s become a suspect in our investigation, but refuses to speak to us to clear his name. I understand this will be difficult for you–’

‘It’s not difficult at all. That man is a worthless piece of garbage. So ask any questions you like.’

Niamh Kennedy met Blake Horowitz soon after he arrived in the UK, having accepted a transfer from his then employer, an Australian property developer. She was pregnant with their first child by the time he left that company to take over as a project director at Triton Homes, and by the time he was assigned to the Hannibal Heights scheme they’d been married for six years and had two healthy sons, whose names I won’t mention here. I managed to find a photo online of the boys posing with their dad, and they share his thick blond hair and confident grin.

‘Why did you and Blake separate?’

‘Because he cheated on me, over and over again, with lots of women. Girls, to be more specific. For years I blamed myself – I’d got fat since having the kids, I wasn’t exciting enough for him in the bedroom, he was stressed at work, all that stuff. Those are the sorts of reasons he gave me, anyway, when I finally confronted him about it.
