A New Dream

Amelia and I had been next door neighbors since middle school and started dating in high school. By all accounts, we were the perfect couple: she was the head cheerleader, and I was the star quarterback. Because high school football is so popular in Texas, we were the rising stars in our little hometown. Everyone knew and adored us, but they especially adored Amelia. She had long red hair with a scattering of freckles across her nose, a gift from her Irish heritage. Her eyes were the bluest I've ever seen on a person, pale but vivid, like the big Texas sky. Though she was petite and gorgeous, the best thing about her was her smile. It was infectious and drew you in.

Everything had been perfect until I injured my back during our last game. Though I recovered after several months of rehab, the doctors said that I would never be able to play football again. Despite the grim prognosis, I tried to make the best of it and went to the same college as Amelia. It was hard sitting in the bleachers every weekend, watching her cheer while my football career was over before it ever truly began. But, I was the dutiful boyfriend and wanted to be supportive of my girl, so I toughed it out. Just because I couldn't follow my dream didn't mean she had to give up on hers.

As usual, everyone loved her. People couldn't help themselves, everyone just gravitated towards her, especially the guys on the football team. They were constantly swarming around, trying to ask her out and invite her to parties. She good-naturedly turned them down, explaining that she had a boyfriend and was utterly happy and completely in love with me.

As those fall months passed, I couldn't help but slide into a dark depression. After every game was over, I couldn't help but feel like I was losing a part of Amelia. It wasn't anything she said or did, but, I couldn't stop myself from comparing myself to the guys who could play. I watched them with such jealousy that I convinced myself that I was inadequate and that Amelia would be better off with one of them. I couldn't stop concocting fantasies around Amelia and Carter Lewis. He was the star quarterback now and was going places. He would make it to the pros, become super rich and probably famous. I imagined their life together, how he would be able to give her everything that I probably wouldn't.

My fantasies didn't end there. Somewhere along the way, the image of Amelia and Carter having sex wormed its way into the back of my mind. I tried to force those wicked thoughts away, but they would return over and over and at some point, I realized that I actually enjoyed them. There was some secret, dark, part of me that wanted to see Amelia with another man in bed.

I kept those thoughts to myself, though Amelia noticed how I had changed.
