As Animesh was chatting with Ritabrata, in the surgeon’s room his mobile rang.

“Undifferentiated adenocarcinoma” the pathologist confirmed.

He had assumed the diagnosis. Histological grading confirmed a gloomy outlook. The thought of conveying the truth to Aparajita made him shriek. It’s often difficult to accept the inevitable.

After the departure of Anuradha, Animesh fell for a beautiful Romanian dentist Lisa. She had deep blue eyes on a rounded face with thin lips revealing her sparkling teeth with a numinous smile. She emitted an aura of her own with her looks or her flare of poetry. A nymphomaniac, she delivered sex for returns in kind.

Her roommate Susan often remarked, “I’m at a loss with her. She can take four people in one night. She doesn’t wait for men to make advances. She is stripped and ready for the fun at the wink of the eye”

“Only whores can sleep with four in one night” Animesh could never figure out “They do it for money. She doesn't need that!”

The affiliation with him was more platonic than physical. He was at a loss to fathom the duality of this beauty with a profound knowledge of poetry and art where her nymphomaniac escapades broke the beat. Lisa notorious for her craving lust never wanted any physical intimacy from him. He was amazed how he was in love with this weird woman. Their spontaneous love was a feeling of well-being without a defined edifice of social definition.

“Why do you sleep around with many?”

“I enjoy it” blasé Lisa paused “You’re not one of the victims. Let us relish the purity of our closeness. You’re very special”

“In what way?”

“Feelings and physique are different”

Lisa snuggly fitted into the vacuous loneliness after departure of Anuradha. She was the first index of love outside the social framework, where the dreams would fly beyond the realms of imagination. Aparajita desired to fit him in a material norm, well away from caprices of a liaison, which he detested. Having traversed the sprints of defined bond, he was comfortable in his solitary existence and had no desire to upset the pattern. Lisa was the harbinger to his conception of a relationship.

He rang Aparajita “Can we meet?”

“In an hour outside the university”

Perched in the New Cathay restaurant at the arcade of Oberoi Grand “I’m afraid the biopsy report reveals a serious problem”

“How serious? Do I have any chance?”

“With the modern treatment we can prolong life but prognosis looks gloomy” she paused anxiously looking at him “Who’ll take care of Jhimli?”

The dreams with him moved to stability of Jhimli. As she was contemplating to sort this out with Tanmoy, he reassured “I’ve not deserted you, have I?”
