“I wonder who does all the setting up of the food and the cleaning” I ask with pinched eyebrows.

“Maybe the elves,” Fawn says at first.

I actually frown harder, considering the truth in that.

“That was a joke, Cl’auta.” She chuckles and so do I; even Baron does. I have to remember to be on my toes with her. I’m way more serious than she’ll ever be.

“There are humans on this property but we’re invisible to them and they’re invisible to us. They set the tables and clean-up around us.”

“Really? But what if we bump into each other?”

“We won’t.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t know; have you ever?”

And then I think about it. I guess not. I’ve never seen the cleaners in Bel Air, Cambridge, or Manhattan.

“I guess not,” I reasonably conclude.

Fawn grins at me. I know why. My seriousness amuses her. I wish I can keep the mood light but it’s time to get her caught up on her ex-boyfriend.

Baron bathes in a strip of sun that’s falling on his side of the table and Lorenzo listens attentively as I fill Fawn in on the power of the sun and how Lario is looking for a vampire who’s supposed to be the holder of it. I tell her about Greece and the universe of vampires living in Mount Olympus. Then I tell her about Shams and how Lario’s a sorcerer. This surprises her. I find myself thinking, Of all the things that should shock her about Lario, it’s that? Then I tell her about seeing Tal, which Baron hears for the first time too.

That’s when he forgets the sun and pounds his fist on the table. “What?!” he almost growls—I mean literally, growls.

“From what I gather, Lario has a whole host of people doing his dirty work. You know he’s got that golden tongue. So, yeah, she’s performing the magic for him. And he’s cracking the whip.”

I can see that Baron is greatly disturbed by this. However, I know that we have no time to harp on what he might be feeling. The minutes are passing and Lario is on the hunt.

“He has found the vampire who holds the power of the sun. It’s a college kid. The good thing is that Tal could only give Lario a partial picture of this vampire and his human target. But I could see everything.”

Lorenzo pulls his brows together, pondering this. “There’s a reason why he couldn’t see.”

“What do you mean,” I ask.

“The power of the sun must’ve already been ignited in the vampire.”

“Which means he’s in contact with the Life Blood,” I conclude.

“Yes.”

Fawn and I stare at each other with dread.

“That means he can potentially get two for one,” I say.

“Potentially,” Lorenzo replies. He sounds so calm, which is at odds with the panic that’s fueling me right now.

Both Fawn and I shoot to our feet at the same time.

We have to go get her, she says to me.

Right now, I say in agreement.

Since I’m standing, Baron stands too.

“Which sister holds the power of the sun,” I ask Lorenzo.
