Chapter Twenty

㊋ Keelan ㊋

Rage pulses through my veins while the staccato drum to my heart rate matches it. Fury is interlaced by something unfamiliar. Protectiveness. As I hold her stare, the fire in her eyes dims with uncertainty. Damn it, I want to find this guy first, and pummel him to a pulp and then some.

“First of all, if this fool thinks he’s going to hurt you and take you away from me, that’ll be his last mistake. Come hell or high water, I’ll make sure he doesn’t.”

Harper leans back so she can get a better look at me. “You can’t promise that, and you can’t protect me all the time. I’m not going to stop living because I’m not sure if this person is really after me. I don’t expect you to take it upon yourself to be my personal bodyguard.”

A scowl overtakes my face. “Harper, what you don’t understand is there’s nothing that’s going to keep me from always trying to keep pain from reaching you, no matter how big or small. That’s just a secondary gift that comes along with love. Something you’re going to have to get used to.”

“You’re too kind, but completely impractical.”

“Love, I can't promise that I'll stop trying to protect you, but we'll figure it out. Deal?”

Harper’s back muscles relax a bit as a little spark re-enters those crystal blue eyes. “Deal.”

I’ve got to get my mind off this. “All right. So, next on the agenda is the Fourth of July celebration that Jaxon hosts every year. Lila will be doing a charity concert. Plus, Abi, Nick’s girlfriend from Scotland, is coming over to interview for a position at our Fire Station. You’ve got to meet her. You’ll absolutely love her.” While I’m rambling on, Harper’s eyes drift, struggling to stay awake.

“You good, love?” I run my fingers through her silky hair as she lays her head on my chest.

“Mmhmm. Just very, very tired. I hardly got a wink of sleep last night, but Abi, the concert, and a July Fourth celebration sound fun. Do we need to bring anything, like baked beans, slaw, or buns?” She yawns and stretches her arms before tucking one close to her side and the other around my waist.

“Babe, we’ve got time to figure out what to bring. You get some sleep.” The gentle ministrations on her scalp lull her to sleep in no time. However, I’m wired for sound.

Watching the love of my life finally sleep peacefully causes a mix of emotions. My chest tightens. I’m panicked and pissed. After Harper’s breathing evens out and she lets out tiny whistles of air, I scoot out from under her, pull my pants back on, and head for the living room, flopping on the couch.

Snatching my phone out of my pocket, I start searching for video surveillance cameras to put around her place. If this dipshit is stalking her, I’m going to catch him before he can lay a hand on her. In my search, I’m thrust back to reality when three knocks sound on the door.
