Chapter 8
DECLAN WANTED desperately to do or say something to fix their current situation. Jonas had grieved for Robert Turner not simply as another law enforcement officer, but as a friend. They’d had more than one conversation about it at the time, and even though Declan was in Europe, he’d consoled Jonas long distance as best he could. Nor did Declan need to be bonded to Lucas to know how much he’d come to like the man in the few years he’d known him and had been deeply saddened as well when Robert died. Declan knew it was the utter truth that if any of them could have done or said anything to save the man, they would have.
The simple fact was, Blair knew it as well.
Blair had not only lost his father, but at the same time been cut off from anyone who might have offered him emotional support. Despite losing many friends over the years, Jonas and Declan, and later Lucas, always had a network of people who shared their grief. The revelation Robert Turner was likely murdered by the same man who’d so cruelly changed Blair and abandoned him wasn’t something easily processed, and even less easily accepted. Blair’s lashing out the way he did was understandable. Those facts didn’t make the situation any less painful for any of them.
Jonas and Lucas had gone after Blair while Declan had collected the keys to all their vehicles. Hurt and angry people did stupid things, and they wanted to avoid any such occurrences. Blair, wanting to be alone, took Moose and hiked the property, promising not to leave but offering no other conversation or interactions.
Right now it was as good as it was going to get.
Jonas was devastated by Blair’s reaction, and for him, those sorts of emotions turned to anger. Fortunately for them all, there was a well-equipped gymnasium below the main section of the Shed, and it included a sturdy punching bag. Jonas was down there now. Punching.
Declan had been going through security feeds from the night before and early in the morning, looking for clues to their target’s whereabouts. They’d be leaving in a little while for the hotel again, this time with the plan of staying until this case was solved, one way or another. He decided to take a break from his task and join Lucas and Jonas. Because of the bond Jonas shared with Blair, they’d all be alerted if a problem arose or Blair went back on his word and left their property.
Lucas was opposite Jonas, bracing the punching bag. He was obviously straining against Jonas’s rapid-fire hits and had morphed to his werewolf form enough to bulk up, giving him added strength while preserving his ability to speak.
“Come on, that all you got?” Lucas taunted.
Jonas, already sweating and red from exertion, hit the bag harder. Declan raised his eyebrows when Lucas’s feet slid on the floor as he was pushed back. Lucas threw his weight forward, forcing Jonas backward, but only by a few inches.
