Tori stood on her patio and unbuttoned her shirt. The only light came either from the moon and the bands of stars surrounding it, or from the lights illuminating the water inside the jacuzzi. She stared into the blinking expanse above her as she slipped the shirt off her shoulders and began unbuttoning her jeans. When those were off, she stripped off her undergarments and stepped up and over the edge of the jacuzzi and into the bubbling water.

She took a deep breath and settled into the middle of the pool, squatting so that she was submerged up to her earlobes. She looked at her arms stretched out in front of her in the water. Tiny bubbles clung to the soft hairs on her arm, visible now because of the chill bumps that covered nearly all her skin. She waved her arms around her, closed her eyes and stretched her neck from side to side, feeling the warmth penetrate her shoulders and back. After a few moments she moved off to the side, to the deepest chair built in to the jacuzzi wall. She settled in, positioning herself for the jets to massage her lower back and neck. She reached behind her for the wine glass she had filled and placed on the edge. She took a sip, returned the glass to its place on the edge, and eased herself down in the chair so she could view the moon and stars overhead.

She thought about the events of the day. Luis’ sharing with her on the morning hunt. Her meeting with Elena, at which she told someone she was in love with them for only the second time in her life. Elena’s profession of love for her for the second time in less than twenty-four hours. Her and Elena’s confirmation of what both of them had suspected based on prior calculations and data about the ranch—that it was doing remarkably well. Sandy Creek Ranch was quickly becoming a success, in both its hunting operations aimed mostly at out-of-towners as well as in its local business, which centered around the restaurant. As her mind buzzed with these thoughts, Tori closed her eyes and smiled up at the moon and the sky. She felt an overwhelming sense of joy and accomplishment, as well as a sense of fulfillment she did not think she had ever felt in her life. It was as if all the pieces were finally in place all at the same time, both personally and professionally.

Luis, however, was a difficult piece of the puzzle. Tori liked him so much, and she knew that Elena loved him, even if she did not love him the way he loved her. She wondered how Elena would handle the situation. And when she would handle it. And how would it affect the workings at the ranch. She knew that Elena had no plans to talk with her about these things, at least not yet. Elena was clear on that—she had limitations
