Chapter 37
âWait. I have to do what?â
A half an hour after his conversation with his brother, Q.A. Caine was in his rental car speeding down the interstate at seventy miles an hour toward Manhattan Island, with Linda Caine in the passenger seat.
He hadnât been able to get a whole sentence out of his mouth before sheâd agreed to join the game. She hadnât even bothered to pack. She said goodbye to her father, climbed into the car and they were gone.
âI said you have to dye your hair,â Caine said.
âI thought thatâs what you said.â
âYou can back out if you want to.â Caine didnât tell her how much of a disaster that would be for him. That was the one concession he made to his morals, such as they were. He knew it wasnât right to involve her at all and he knew he shouldâve given her the details before she agreed to join, but sheâd been eager, and heâd taken advantage. Still, he wouldnât and couldnât force her to do what she didnât want to do.
âItâs OK,â she said. âIâll do what you want. I should try out a new style anyway. What color does it have to be?â
âBrown.â
âA dull old brown, huh? I guess I can live with that.â
âIf you canât, tell me now. Iâll need to make other arrangements. Time is running out quickly.â
âWhen do we do whatever it is weâre doing?â
âThursday night.â
She nodded. She didnât seem surprised or worried.
âThursday,â she repeated. âHalloween.â
âYes.â
âIs it dangerous?â
âNot for you.â
âBut it is for you,â she said. It was not a question.
âIt might be. Iâm doing all I can to mitigate the danger.â
âGood. Iâd hate to lose you.â
âWhy? Donât you want your own bookstore?â
She shook her head.
âNot that way.â
He shot a glance at her.
âSorry, that was meant to be a joke.â
âNot a good one,â she said.
âIâve never been very funny.â
âI know. Youâre like father that way.â
âOh, my dear girl, call me anything you want, but in godâs name donât tell me Iâm like your father.â
âIn some ways youâre a lot like him.â
âThen how is it youâve gotten yourself so attached to me, and not him?â
âMaybe because you like me, and he doesnât.â
âYour father loves you.â
âOh, I know. He loves me but he doesnât like me. You like me. But, well, I donât know if you love me or not.â
Caine sighed.
âIâm not very comfortable with the concept of love.â
âI know.â
âI do care for you.â
âI know that too. You donât have to say it.ââ
âI know.â
Linda smiled.
âMaybe I should try to give father more of a chance. I think weâre doing better. He didnât even seem to be bothered by my going with you.â
âHe was bothered.â
âOh, I know that. But he didnât seem to be. Thatâs progress.â
âIf you say so.â
Linda laughed. Then she tried to hide her smile behind an expression of mock seriousness.
âOK,â she said, âenough of this foolishness. What else can you tell me about these fun and games?â
âNot much.â
âWell, youâre stealing something, right?â
âIn a way.â
âWhat?â
âA book.â
âI figured that.â
âWell, thatâs all Iâm going to tell you for the moment.
