Chapter 6

WRATH came back shortly after, looking pissed. Push, Scratch, and the sheriff were waiting for him outside the department building.

“He got away,” Wrath stated sourly after coming to a stop in front of them.

“Who was he?” Push asked, arms folded. “The sheriff said he thought he heard you say the guy’s name.”

Wrath met Push’s eyes before answering. “It was Sloth,” he said. “From the Deadly Seven. Sloth was the sniper. That’s why nothing we tried worked on him.”

“Fuck,” Scratch said flatly.

“We may very well be that,” Wrath agreed, giving him a slight nod.

“Wait,” Sheriff Black interrupted, holding his hands up. “What’s this all about here? You’re telling me the guy that was on my department’s roof shooting the place up was the same guy you used to take your marching orders from?”

“Yes,” Wrath answered gravely. “Sloth was the leader of the Deadly Seven.”

“And he’s in my town?” the sheriff pressed.

“Yes.” Wrath gave another nod, then added, “Still.”

“How’d he get away?” Scratch asked.

Wrath let out a sigh. “He’s much faster than people give him credit for. I think whatever it was Push did caused more damage than we thought. He was moving like he was injured but kept going. I kept up at first, but he gave me the slip near the old tire warehouse past that patch of forest in back. Sloth loved staying one step ahead of everybody else, so it shouldn’t surprise me that he’d have an escape route planned.”

Push mulled all of this over. “I’ve got to report it in,” he said at last, reaching for his phone. “The Association will want to know. Plus, they’ll also need to hear that the Pranksta got away.”

Wrath waited until Push wandered off before speaking again. “Better you than me.”

In a little bit, Push returned, looking the worse for wear. “How did it go?” Scratch asked, preparing for a bomb.

“We’ve been reassigned,” Push told him, ignoring Wrath completely for the moment. “The Association is making arrangements as we speak for the three of us to remain in Shove Point.”

Wrath’s eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. “What?” he shouted.

Scratch and Push gave him a look. “We’re going to be stationed here until the Pranksta Gayngsta and Sloth are captured.”

“The hell you are!” Black barked. “I’ve had me one hell of a migraine from the minute you three set foot here. I’ll be damned if I’m gonna endure this sort of thing on a daily basis.”

“For what it’s worth, Sheriff,” Push told him sadly, “I’m not happy, either.”

“None of us are, apparently,” Scratch noted, still looking squarely at Wrath.

“The Association already cleared our transfer with the Arkansas governor,” Push continued, though noting the quiet fury in Wrath’s face. “They are searching for a place we can stay in while we’re here and having our things shipped down. We are to make finding Sloth our top priority, but locating the Pranksta Gayngsta is still on the list.”

“I guess that sort of makes sense,” Scratch mused. “Between the two, the Pranksta wasn’t wanted by the feds.
