I didn’t have to wait long to find out what was in the “Quignon” file. A few days later, while I’d tried to keep my cool and not do anything out of the ordinary, as I’d been advised by Paul-Henri, I received a text from the mystery number. There was no name and I didn’t know if it was Paul-Henri who’d sent it or one of the many recruits working undercover. In any event, I was asked to look for the yellow folder that had been placed in my desk’s third drawer, under a pile of envelopes, and to go and read it somewhere quiet as soon as possible. So I sneaked the folder out with me to the toilets, where I could guarantee to be on my own for at least five minutes. Nevertheless I had to act quickly, since as you know, Anita hated us leaving our posts, even for a biological need. I locked myself in the toilets and placed the folder on the toilet seat, then opened the cardboard sleeve. There were several documents inside. There were some emails between Tonsantar’s human resources and Quignon from a few weeks ago. I realised when I read the contents that Quignon had tried his luck with Gargill’s principal competitor. Confirmations of interviews, job and role descriptions. Tonsantar was looking for a new human resources director and La Quigne had secretly applied. There were even some photos in the folder of a bar in a major hotel. You could see them talking and even shaking hands. Now I understood why Paul-Henri had claimed he had something serious against him. According to the P Register, attempting to leave your job whilst you already had a permanent position in a business amounted to high treason. It was now considered that the company which employed you was giving you a major opportunity, and running off to someone else was seen as a rejection of the helping hand you’d been offered in the midst of all this economic mess. And as I explained earlier, the “high treason” endorsement was the worst you could receive. If this was stuck in your file, that was the end of your professional career. Short of creating your own company (and even then, you’d never really manage to get rid of such a label and your murky past would always haunt you), you’d lose your place in this country’s economic market. I turned the pages rapidly. There wasn’t a vast amount, but it was quite enough to sink him. I sent a message back to confirm that I had indeed read the folder. Someone called me back within minutes.

‘Paul-Henri?’ I whispered.

‘Yes. So? What do you think?’

‘It’s one hell of a deal, for sure. If Tang finds out, he will be kicked out, with a good chance of being put on file as well’.

‘Which will mean he’ll have to forget firing you’.

‘What should I do with this folder in the meantime? Hide it?’

‘Take it home with you, make a copy and keep it in a safe place.
