CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

“How did your day go today? Did you solve the problems standin’ in the way of the police bringing in the bad guys all right?”

“I solved the problem. However, it was not with guys but gals.”

“I can’t wait to hear this.” He set a plate filled with a tossed salad down on the table in front of her.

“Before we get into our discussion of wrong versus right, I want you to know I appreciate your making dinner this evening.”

“No problem. I was home. You weren’t. Besides, I like to show off my culinary skills.”

“You seem to have more than a few skills to show off.”

“Are you complaining?” He stood still, looking down at her, before placing the steak covered with mushrooms on her plate.

Pouring some Ranch Dressing over her salad, she smiled. “If I was complaining, you would have already been shown to the door.”

“I think we best get off this subject before we allow one appetite to dominate the one I am placing before you.”

“I agree,” she said, forking up a mouthful of salad.

After placing a foil-wrapped baked potato on the plate beside their steak, he sat down at the end of the table.

“I’ll let you go first,” he said.

“I received a call from Phil this morning about a missing baby at the hospital.”

“That can’t be good.”

“The mother was all teary-eyed in the telling of how the baby was missing from his bed when she came back from the bathroom.”

“Of course, she would be upset, Pat.” He gazed at her with a surprised look on his face. “She just found her baby missing.”

“Not so fast with the doubts about Mommy Dearest, Officer Walker. Turns out the sobbing mother of that little boy who was born only hours earlier sold him to an adoption agency.”

His fork hit his plate as he stared over at her. “That would take one cold-hearted bitch.”

“As Phil and I agreed, drugs can make a person do strange things. Which tells me something I didn’t think about before. If she is on drugs, that means her poor baby is also addicted to drugs.”

“Yeah, and I bet the woman she sold the baby to was planning on neglecting to divulge that information to any prospective parents.”

“You are so right. Phil and I pretended to be a couple looking to adopt a boy, and she never mentioned that the mother of the child we were hoping to adopt is a drug user.”

“Then the public wonders how someone can walk up and shoot another human right between the eyes and not think twice about it.”

“Glad it is me you’re sharing these feelings with and not the head of the police department.”

“Yeah, no shit. But you have to admit you can see where I am coming from. We deal with sickos day in and day out, and I have to ask myself why are these idiots still walking upright.”

“Well, anyway, Phil arrested her and took her in. So at least there is one more deviant off the street. Now, let’s hear how your day went.
