ZANE

For the first night in a week, Laney didn't spend the night and I didn't sleep well. Waking up without her by my side and looking over to see her spot empty, feels all wrong.

I’m not sure when exactly she became such an integral part of my life, but she did. One day, I didn’t know she even existed and now I don’t know how I’ve lived this long without her.

Maybe I’m being sappy or acting like a lovesick fool, but I don’t even care. I know I’m falling in love with her hardcore. Unfortunately, the stupid tour is happening soon, and I don’t want to do it anymore. It’s been set up for almost a year now, though, and I can’t back out-- even though I’m damn tempted.

Truthfully, I don’t need the money or the recognition. When I agreed to do it, I had nothing else going on so I figured why the hell not. But now I wish I hadn’t been so quick to jump onboard.

Of course, I did have Becca, but I think she’s one of the reasons I decided to get out of town for a few months. Anything to avoid talking about our upcoming wedding was a good thing. I get out of bed and walk over to my dresser, open the top drawer and reach under a pile of clothes where I’d stashed the engagement ring.

Holding it up, I can’t believe I almost married another woman. I don’t know if it was societal expectations or just pressure I’d put on myself but marrying Becca would’ve ended in nothing but unhappiness for both of us.

And, God, if I had met Laney as an engaged man then nothing would’ve ever happened between us, and I would’ve missed out on the greatest woman. It’s strange how things work out, I think, and set the ring on top of the dresser. I still don’t know what to do with it. I guess I'll sell it. God knows, it doesn’t have any sentimental value and there’s no reason for me to keep it.

I grab a bottle of a sports drink that I endorse from the fridge and pause when I catch sight of a pink sticky note attached to the bottle of apple juice. With a smile, I reach in and pluck it out.

“You’re the apple of my eye,” I read in Laney’s perfect handwriting. So damn cheesy and I love it. I have no idea when she snuck that in there, but I love finding her little notes. They brighten up my whole day. I tuck the note into my pocket and head out, riding high and ready to face another long day of training.

When I get to the gym, I change into my workout clothes and meet Kai on the mat. He puts me through some serious cardio and then we do some sparring. Kai knows his stuff and if every martial art had a black belt, then Kai would have them all. It always amazes me
