CHAPTER ELEVEN
If the weasel doesn’t leave soon I’ll deck him. Gabe flexed his fingers and paced. The old man had no idea he was on Candid Camera.
Gabe had used the miracle-hear amplifier to listen to suspects while he carried on normal conversations before, but he’d never been as personally involved as he was tonight. He’d always been assisting someone who’d come to G D for aid. Now he needed help.
Darlin’ brought Gabe a glass, which he drained in one long gulp.
“What the hell was that?” He shuddered.
G D chuckled. “Probably her Chamomile brew.”
“What the hell is Chamomile brew?” Gabe glared at Darlin’ and offered the glass back to her.
“It’s a calming tea. You need to stop pacing and just pay attention. Melissa is fine.”
“It’s not just about Lissie. The man with her was my teacher. I respected him. He wasn’t my favorite person, but I hate thinking he could be threatening Melissa and my family. And if he hits on Lissie I’ll deck him.”
“Heads up, boys. He’s on the way out.”

Mr. Brady rose from the sofa. “Melissa, you and young Gabriel seem to be spending a lot of time together. Should we be looking for a new ring on your finger anytime soon?” His smile seemed a little off. She almost offered him a tissue when he pulled wrinkled handkerchief to wipe his brow.
“Young Gabriel, sir?” A quaint way to refer to a man with a teenaged son.
“Mr. Gabriel, then.” His smile this time was genuine. “I still think of you as my former students, no matter how old you are.”
He picked up his dish and hers. “Let me help you clean up.” He started toward her kitchen door.
She rose and snatched the dishes from his outstretched hands and put them back on the table. “I’ll take care of these. I never let guests clean up.”
He patted her shoulder, then he ambled toward the door. “You don’t have to answer my nosey question about a ring if you don’t want to.”
“No, sir. It’s okay.” Melissa walked with him. “Gabe’s just looking after me since the family’s out of town. We’re not like that.”
“The chemistry between you two is hard to miss. But that’s all right, You’re entitled to a life. Just use discretion at school. And take things slowly, you’re vulnerable now.”
“Sir, there’s nothing to take slowly.”
Mr. Brady looked so tired she felt sorry for him. He couldn’t be the boogie man, he just couldn’t.
“Think about my offer to help. If you’ll look one last time for discs, or CDs, or even get your husband’s hard drive, I’ll be glad to help you. And you’re welcome to escape to my place at the lake until I put it up for sale.”
“I appreciate the offer.” She hovered by the door.
He patted her again, his pudgy hand heavy on her shoulder. “Don’t be shocked if the school board insists you take some time away from the school.”
“I understand.”
“Time for an old man to head on home, though I’m never in a hurry to go into that empty house.
