Chapter 15

GEORGIA

My head is pounding. It hurts like hell. It feels like a hundred little men have made a home inside my brain and are knocking to get out. It occurs to me that that’s an weird thought to have, but everything feels a little nonsensical right now.

I try to sit down, but my body pings backward like a slingshot. I realize my arms are shackled to something. Through my blurred eyes, I can make out random shapes in a dark room. I notice that though it’s still light outside, the curtains are fully closed. When I turn my head, I see that I’m tied to a rickety old bed.

I open my mouth to scream, but my mouth is covered by something, gagging me. I pull against my restraints, but the handcuffs cut deep in my wrists and I have to stop, terrified of passing out again from the pain. I know one thing - I can’t go back to sleep. I have to figure out what happened before my assailant comes back.

I try to trace back how I got here, though my brain is cloudy. It takes me a while to remember that I was on my way to see Hudson and Aiden. It takes me even longer to recall the woman in the hoodie. And finally, I remember the way she clamped a tissue to my mouth, suffocating me with that sweet smelling rag. I’ve seen chloroform in movies, but I didn’t know people actually used it. How did she get her hands on it? And more importantly, why?

The details don’t matter. Now that I remember who did this to me, I can escape. If I can get out of here, I can tell the police what happened. Maybe they’ll even believe me this time. Won’t that arrogant young officer feel stupid when he realizes he could have prevented this?

At least I know Aiden and Hudson will get suspicious soon. They will be looking for me. They’re smart, they’ll figure out what happened outside the theatre, especially after Hudson and I found the letter. But how will they know where to go? I don’t even know where I am, or how long I’ve been knocked out. What if I’ve been smuggled away somewhere, via a boat or a plane? What if I’m not even in New York anymore?

I’m not delirious enough to really believe my own paranoia, but I am scared. That, I’ll admit for free. I hate that I can’t move, can’t do anything to save myself. If someone comes in here, I swear to God I’ll kick them. My legs are free, so I may as well use them. Though what if it makes them angry? What if they’re armed? What will being violent solve? I’ll still be stuck to this bed. I’ve only read Gerald’s Game once, but I know how this scenario ends. I want to make it out of here alive, so I have to play this right. I have to be smart Georgia, not impulsive Georgia.
