Chapter 10
âWhat are you not telling me?â Callie asked Mel the next morning.
Mel was pacing Holdenâs bedroom upstairs. Sheâd needed some privacy to talk to her best friend on the phone while Holden held a conference call with several members of his team. More than a few of them were involved in this shitshow. She wondered if they would dedicate the same amount of resources to a random person needing similar assistance. Probably not.
Mel wasnât a random person. She had history with Holden. History that evidently caused his team to refer to her as âhis woman.â That hadnât slipped by her.
Mel ran a hand through her messy curls as she paced. âProbably a dozen things. I canât keep my lies straight any longer.â
Callie sighed. âIâm sorry you ever felt you had to lie in the first place.â
âYeah, well, I didnât see another option. If Iâd told you I was hung up on Holden after the cruise, you would have pressured me to get together with him.â
âDuh, might I remind you it was you who went behind my back to set up a vacation weekend with Grant for the same exact reason. I was too stubborn to admit I was in love with him and needed to figure out a way to work shit out. And look what happened? We made it work, and now weâre married and life is amazing.â
âItâs different.â
âI knew you would say that,â Callie responded. âBut itâs not.â
âIt is,â Mel insisted. âIâm not like you. I donât thrive on danger and chaos. I like order in my life. I like being a boring professor.â
âHowâs that working for you this week?â Callie tossed back. âLook, that was callous. Iâm sorry, but the point is shit happens to good people. Youâre lucky you werenât home when those fuckers broke into your home. Youâre lucky you knew people who could get you out of town and protect you.â
âI know.â Mel kept pacing. Everything Callie said was true.
âAt the end of the day, Mel, you donât want to look back on your life with regrets because you were too stubborn to figure out a way to make things work with the man you love. Itâs especially depressing because Iâm pretty sure he feels the same way about you.â
Mel wandered to the window and stared blankly out at what should have been a breathtaking view if she were in a better frame of mind. âI donât know how, Callie. I mean I canât visualize any scenario in which it works for the two of us. Iâve thought about it a million times. I worked hard to get where I am. Iâm not going to quit my job at the university and move to Indiana to live on a farm and wait for my man to stop by every three months after he saves the day. I canât do it. Iâd lose my mind.â
âI know. I get that. But there has to be a middle ground. Something the two of you can agree on that fulfills both your needs enough to keep you happy.
