Well if you desperately want to hear more from him then I suppose we can.
“Did you do something to the samples from the site?” Desmarais asked. I don’t know how it sounded. I don’t – you know when you remember something, but what you learnt afterward kind of changes how you remember it? That. That’s why I can’t tell you. But he might have sounded pissier than I recall.
Vicky gave him this scandalised look and Phil said, “No,” like Desmarais had just asked if we’d been up there fucking some kids. “You think those cranky little forensics fucks would even let us near their samples?”
He put the phone back in his pocket and said so, so grudgingly, “I didn’t think so. You might have pissed on the reports given half a chance but him, and her, they’re not that stupid.”
“Oh thanks,” Vicky said.
“Why … would you think we had?” Phil left his computer alone and just stood around awkwardly with his hands in his pockets, looking like a disaffected geography teacher.
Desmarais got the phone out again and wagged it at all of us in turn. “I have just been told. By Mahmood and Longfellow.” He made one of his most disgusted faces. “That les experts en criminalistique have made accusations concerning the integrity of their samples. They say that the objects, the fragments they are sending to the lab are not arriving in the condition they were sent in; they say they have contacted the laboratory and heard reports contrary to their first findings, their preliminary findings—”
The look that passed between the Jersey States Homicide division and our auxiliary officer, Vicky Gustin, was I think resignation. There are certain things that you come to expect.
And there are some you don’t, but I’ll come to that later. “That’s nothing to do with us, boss,” I said. “We left them to it. Who the hell are Mahmood and Longfellow anyway?”
“Mainland officers,” Vicky said, catching Desmarais’s eye briefly. “First point of call for Anna and Josh now. I don’t know if they’re in charge of the site as well.”
“They’re making a very serious accusation,” Desmarais scowled, “and those … officers … from Scotland Yard, they are making a serious accusation by implication. They presume that it is the fault of the States police officers, and I have no evidence to suggest not.”
“Or it’s their fault and they want you to believe it’s us,” Phil said, quite reasonably, I thought. “To be blunt with you, Chief Officer, there weren’t any problems with the site until they showed up. We let the forensics folks do their jobs, sort their own stuff out. They know what they’re doing.”
I actually doubted that in Josh’s case, but why spoil a beautiful moment?
Outside it was raining. Did I mention that? I’m trying to give you a sense of atmosphere beyond the feeling of we’re being fucked that was building up in me and I suspect in the others too. Maybe even Desmarais, if he had actual human emotions.
Desmarais stared at us for a bit longer.
