Chapter Six

Cat

AT FIRST IT FEELS SURREAL, strolling in on the arm of a prince to a whole room full of dignitaries and royals. Faces gape and I can almost hear their thoughts. Who the hell is that woman? Where did she come from? Why is she here when she so clearly does not belong in our domain? I glimpse a couple of celebrities, people I recognize only from having seen them on the television. There are heads of countries and even a well-known actor or two amongst the glittering crowd. Beauty and wealth are in abundance, with elaborate hats, silken fabric, and sparkles. Oh, the sparkles. There are diamonds so large they are almost blinding, on necks, on fingers, and dangling from ears. Everywhere. I am so out of my depth.

I cling to Dav as tightly as he does to me, seeking and finding comfort from this most unlikely source. For a moment I wish I’d taken up Princess Isabella’s offer of the necklace. But it isn’t me, to dress up in bling, and after the initial entrance, when attention moves on to others and my nerves finally begin to calm, I know I did the right thing not to accept anything beyond the dress and matching wrap.

After Dav deposits me at my allocated seat a couple of rows from the front and makes his way to the family pew at the side of the altar, I automatically seek out the security detail. Have they gotten any further with their investigation into the shooting? Is there any more information about the who or the why? It’s still a worrying issue, particularly as the king refused to delay today’s ceremony, but Jason is very good at his job, and I know the team will be working closely with local authorities to bring whoever was responsible to justice.

Seeing my security colleagues dotted throughout the building in their dark suits and white shirts, touching an ear every so often as someone barks instruction through linked headpieces, adds to the strangeness of the situation. Yesterday I belonged with them; a respected part of their team. Today, I don’t really belong anywhere.

What do Jason and the rest of the team think, seeing me enter at Davide’s side? They must assume we’re involved sexually, and of course they’re correct. Which means that down the track I am going to hand in my notice. It doesn’t matter how loudly Dav protests, I simply can’t be involved in royal protective detail if I’ve become personally involved with one of the ruling family. However brief that involvement might be. Security lesson one-zero-one.

Today though, I try to put my job and future out of my head and soak up this unique experience. I can’t help but feel excited by the fact that I’m part of the festivities, not on the periphery for once, and when Eleni enters the chapel in a slim, figure-hugging lace creation, even my jaded eyes have to blink away a little bit of moisture at the joy radiating from her expression.
