Tasar on the Hunt

Tasar’s red robes with purple trim blew in the early evening breeze as he entered Vebaco. The tiny village had only one tavern, which was also the inn. Even for a tiny village, the pub was lively. He pushed through the door. As the Dark Elf entered the tavern, no one spoke. Silence, utter silence fell upon the once lively crowd. His thin lips curled. “Relax, I’m not a Darkstrider. I’m just here for a drink.” As he moved over towards the bar, the stools suddenly became empty.

Paul slapped on a plastic smile. “What can I get you?”

Tasar tossed five crowns on the bar. “Whiskey and a little…conversation.”

Paul frowned. “I’m a quiet guy myself,” he said as he poured some whiskey in a glass.

“That’s too bad. How about I talk and you just listen?” Tasar asked. He put on a gold ring with elven script engraved along the band. There was an emerald with a diamond in the center mounted on the face of the ring. He tapped it and smiled.

“I can do that,” Paul said.

Tasar slammed back his whiskey. “I was in Grug looking for a friend of mine, Brock Feran.”

Paul swallowed as he looked away. He pulled a damp cloth from behind the bar and started to wipe it down. “Never heard of him.”

Tasar motioned for more whiskey. “Too bad.”

Paul refilled the glass. “Sorry.”

“Ever been to Grug?” Tasar asked.

Paul rubbed his chin. “Yeah, that’s the port south of Methos Lake, right?”

Tasar nodded. “Yes.” He began to rub his ring. The diamond within the emerald began to glow. “I met a jeweler who knew him. Apparently, he purchased a necklace for his new lover. Everyone has to move on, I suppose.”

“Why do you say that?” Paul asked.

Tasar feigned surprised. “Well, his wife was killed by the Darkstriders. It was done in such a brutal way that he went crazy.” His ring glowed brightly. “He went crazy. I can understand it; can’t you?”

Paul blinked, as if his own will vanished in the glow of Tasar’s ring. “I can understand it. More whiskey?”

“Thank you.” Tasar pushed his glass towards Paul. “He made outlandish claims about overthrowing the Darkstriders.” Tasar began to laugh. “He even claims that the feared prophesied king was with him.” He shook his head as he sipped his whiskey. The ring was glowing a bright green with a white center. “Are you sure he hasn’t come here? The merchant was certain he was on his way here—to Vebaco, I mean.”

“What does he look like?” Paul asked.

“He’s a strong human in his thirties. He used to be a blacksmith until his wife died. He’s traveling with a woman about the same age. Her name is Keya. She’s a priestess of Odella.” Tasar rubbed his ring, making it glow even more. “Are you sure you didn’t see them?”

Sweat formed on Paul’s forehead. “I…yes, they were here yesterday. They were asking for volunteers to go with them.”

Tasar smiled. “Good.”

“But, they weren’t alone,” Paul said.

Tasar raised an eyebrow.
