There’d been something familiar about that handwriting from the first time I saw it, although I’d never put two and two together. All the sense knocked out of me by those smiling eyes. This was identical to Veronica’s script and I realised, with a falling sensation in my stomach, that the hand which had written this note had also written the letters from her.

I remembered the optical illusions I’d been shown as a child. Turn the plate or the picture slightly and the image, although the same, appears as something new and unexpected. The wild-goose chase at the hospital, Foden’s estrangement from his mother, the letter I’d been asked to deliver, at last they all made sense.

There was no Veronica. Only Ronnie Palmer.
