Strategies of Success for Meaningful Change

Despite change being everywhere and constant, choosing to implement change in your life can be incredibly hard!

Think about the millions of people who attempt dieting to lose weight each year. More than half will fail in their attempt. The same goes for those taking the leap of faith and going “cold turkey” to quit smoking. And similarly, thousands of people will sign up for a gym membership as part of their New Year’s resolution and never go more than a few times. Clearly, change isn’t as easy as it seems.

There’s a difference between change and meaningful change. In the examples just provided, meaningful change is being sought in an effort to be fitter and healthier. This differs significantly from change that is forced upon us due to unforeseen circumstances. In the former, we have to make purposeful and intentional choices to guide the change, so a valued outcome is realized. In the latter, we are simply affected by the forces of change that are requiring us to either make a choice to adapt or to resist. Both can result in positive changes in our lives, and both types of change require specific strategies in order to succeed. But only meaningful goals are intentional and guide our best efforts toward a Bold Life.

With this in mind, a number of change models have been studied and suggested over time. Kurt Lewin proposed a three-step model where we experience a process of unfreezing, changing, and refreezing. In other words, Lewin believed we had to let go of current habits, choose to behave differently, and then adopt new behaviors as new habits for success. This model offers a great perspective when considering how we can make a meaningful change. But at the same time, it can be too simplistic in providing a specific approach. This is especially true when choosing to make changes associated with your new Bold Life pursuits.

A better model of change, and one that has been studied in greater depth, was proposed by John Norcross, Carlo DiClemente, and James Prochaska. Though their original change model described six steps to realize effective and meaningful change, four of these steps are the most critical. These steps include psychologically acknowledging the need for a change, preparing for the change, taking action, and then using strategies to help you persevere and persist in your efforts. The research from their studies showed that each of these steps is incredibly important if actual change is to occur.

Why do you think so many people fail in their efforts to diet or quit smoking? Certainly, these are difficult tasks, and many barriers to success may exist. But the most significant reason failure rates are so high is because people often skip a few of the essential steps of change.

For example, when someone chooses to quit smoking cold turkey, rarely have they mentally prepared themselves or planned for the challenges they will face. As a result, they jump into action and commit to complete abstinence.
