TV Debate

Stop pointing that camera at me. Sarah saw her face appearing on the overhead TV monitors. She and Lacey were in a Broadway TV studio where they’d come to watch Robert in his live presidential debate. Sitting in the second row of the studio audience, Sarah felt exposed. She turned and scanned for Dexter in the crowd. All day, she’d been on edge. Nine names were on his death list and one of them was already scored out. The final two names were Robert and hers. Did that mean he was leaving them till last? She was amazed that he imagined he could defeat the Committee. They’d already be taking countermeasures. Even though she didn’t work for special ops any more, she suspected it was just a matter of time before the Delivery Manager contacted her to give her new mission orders. That was one of the things about special ops – you never truly left. But she’d long since lost her nerve. I can’t do it, she thought. Not before my wedding. It’s impossible. I can’t do anything like that ever again.

‘Are you alright?’ Lacey asked.

Sarah stared ahead. The Delivery Manager was the last person in the world she wanted to hear from. Last time…

She’d phoned Dargo earlier to tell him what happened at Prohibition A. He said she and Lacey should get some rest. Rest? Impossible with Dexter on the loose. Every moment, she expected him to show up. When and where? Those were the only unknowns. Should she tell Robert? A zero-sum game.

Earlier in the day, Robert had flown to Chicago for another campaign speech. He got back a couple of hours ago – courtesy of a private jet – for the three-way TV debate with Democratic candidate Tom Lawson and President Rieper. She’d spoken to him briefly on his cell phone. He was upbeat, looking forward to the showdown.

‘What’s the story here?’ Lacey asked.

Sarah explained that the format of the debate was for each candidate to talk for ten minutes. Then there would be half an hour in which a distinguished panel of political commentators would quiz the candidates. Each candidate could then make a concluding statement.

‘Here they come,’ Lacey whispered.

The candidates filed onto the stage and sat on raised stools. Sarah gazed at Robert. He had no idea of how much danger he was in. Sitting with the relaxed posture of a chat-show host, he was the only candidate who looked comfortable. Thirty-nine years old, he
