Suddenly, I turned and studied him in a moment of epiphany. “You’re the moon,” I said simply.

“Am I?”

I nodded. “Does that make me the sun?”

“The sunshine of my life?” He joked with a quick chuckle. “Yes, you are.”

“It’s just funny.” Was I taking it too seriously, reading too much symbolism into everything like I always did? “I always thought it would have been the other way around.”

Dominic seemed prepared for my overthinking the situation. In fact, as he went on, he sounded like he had given it some thought himself. “Not if you think about it. It’s like our text messages. You almost always text good morning. I take care of good night a lot of the time. Maybe that’s the way it’s always been.”

“Maybe...” I stared at the mirror still, tilting it a little to get different views of my flat behind us. I hated to think that he wouldn’t be sharing my reflection for long, but did not dwell on that. “I love that. I love this.”

“See.” He turned to me. “You’re so much better at getting presents. You know what to say.”

“Beautiful, even though I could easily say you just blew my present out of the water - again - I won’t. It’s not about that at all. I’m just a bastard about gift-giving. This is the most incredible gift... well, besides this ring.” I held up my hand and, laughing, started over. “You give the best presents, I guess, is what I mean to say.”

“Well, thank you for that.” He hugged me tightly. I reached over to lean the mirror against the wall, so I could hold him instead. “I still feel shitty about before, though. You’re not a bastard about anything. I love my present.”

“I’m glad.” We were close to each other, rubbing noses and holding on. I breathed in when Dominic breathed out. We smiled and I felt the happy pull of laziness combine with the exciting tingle of familiar passion.

Not yet, though. For a while, at least, I just wanted to enjoy talking to him, while he was awake and settled and full and content. “Do you paint anything else?”

“I paint a little,” he pawed softly at my chest and rubbed his nose on my neck. That tingle grew. “Daphne got me doing it. I use her supplies when I visit her studio space. It’s fun. Relaxing.”

“You never told me.” I was only vaguely disappointed to have not been informed, but it was a lovely surprise.

“I was embarrassed. I’m really not good. I paint silly things, like happy animals and trees.”

“So? I’d still love to see.” I kissed him with a loving sigh. “You can paint the walls of a children’s ward at a hospital someday with happy animals and trees.” My heart warmed unexpectedly at the thought as I said it. Dominic gave a pleasant whimper.

“I’ll do that.”

“You absolutely will.” My hands clutched his back a little more purposefully.

“Still seems so far off.” He took in a deep, calming breath as I pushed up the fabric, pulling my fingers over his smooth skin as I kissed his neck more excitedly.
