Chapter Fifteen

Bentley

Bentley watched Temperance's hair bounce as she walked. She'd twisted it up, pinning it with a pencil, only to rip the pencil out and let her hair down about five times since Alistair had told them the Lerian council scholar was here to test their connection. He longed to see it loose and tousled around her shoulders. He'd like to see it fanned over his pillow even more, but he'd sensed Temperance needed time and would not push her.

As for the reason they were all nervously walking to Alistair's office, Bentley didn't need the test. He'd never really wanted it, but they all needed to be on the same page when it came to their anantha. Bentley had never felt as whole, as complete as he did when he was around her. Not touching her had been his greatest challenge but he'd managed because he knew it had been what she needed. But now that she was clearly nervous, he had to hold back even more.

The asinine part was that Bentley suspected the others were beginning to feel the same way as well. Though, they showed it a little differently. Perhaps Gideon and Edric hadn't quite come to terms with it, but, in the deepest corner of their hearts, they knew. They had to.

Scholar Glorigh waited for them in Alistair's office with his hands clasped behind his back. He wore thick ceremonial council robes of forest green with a silver and gold sash embroidered with three stars to indicate his place on the council.

He glanced briefly at each of the warrior brothers before lingering on Temperance who stood in the middle of them. The four had spread out, surrounding her on instinct when faced with a new person. Gideon was in front, of course. He nodded respectfully to the scholar except, though the scholar didn't notice. He wasn't looking at Gideon, but at Temperance.

"Is this her?" the scholar asked and instantly Bentley didn't like the man's tone. The question in his tone was marked with incredulity.

"This is the possible anantha, correct," Alistair replied.

"She isn't possible, she is," Rhett said.

"We haven't had an anantha in over a hundred years. Why would one appear now? And in the form of a human?" Scholar Glorigh asked him.

Rhett lifted his chin, which on Rhett was as good as a raised middle finger directed to the councilman. "I can't tell the future, scholar, I only know what is before me."

"And yet your Primus isn't so sure?" the scholar asked. He had a long face, like a horse, and used every inch of it to look down at Gideon.

Gideon cleared his throat. "It seemed impossible, but enough time has passed that I now believe—"

"That proves nothing except perhaps whatever charm she's cast has had longer to work," the scholar said with a dismissive wave.

Bentley, Rhett, and Edric all growled. No one outside of their brotherhood cut off their Primus. It was funny when Temperance started doing it, cute even. It wasn't cute now.

Alistair glided forward, between the warrior brothers and the scholar.
