Chapter 14
Mia
After lunch, Cash and I walk the block to enjoy the beach town just a little bit longer instead of cutting right to the car. I am surprised to see the number of high-end boutiques along the boardwalk. Some I recognize from New York, but some are clearly local but no less upscale. We both stop at the same window, for there is a dress on a mannequin that is just a torso. It is a simple tank dress with a slight cowl in the neck, which is one of my favorite designs. The best part about it is the fabric. It is splotchy like a nighttime sky and has a sheen to it. Hardly a yard of fabric, it is spectacular. I only stop to admire it, but Cash takes me by the hand and leads me into the shop.
âThe dress is yours,â he says.
Though Iâm accustomed to my father buying me extravagant gifts on the spot, I mildly protest.
âNo, no,â I say. âSeriously, I donât need another dress.â
I remember Iâm on the run and my actual wardrobe is at home, but even on vacation, as my father put it, I want for nothing.
âA dress is not a possession,â says Cash. âItâs an experience. And I want us both to have that experience.â
I open my mouth to argue with him, even though itâs useless, and he cuts his eyes to me. There is the look that all of them have given me. The one that reminds me they are in charge. Cash engages the store clerk and gets her to remove the dress from the window since itâs the only one available in my size. He hands it to me to try it on.
âWhat size shoe are you?â he asks rhetorically as though he is trying to recall.
He picks out a pair of shoes and asks for them in my size.
âThis is just to give me the full picture,â he says as I close the dressing room door, which is nothing more than a shutter.
I strip down, fully aware that the only thing between Cash and me is the not-entirely-solid partition that doesnât even go all the way to the ground. The store clerk rests the shoes heâs chosen on the floor below the shutter door. I slip them on. I bend over and fluff my hair. I stand up and smooth the hair down to a point so that it looks fluffy and full. I am pleased with the way I look. I open the shutter door for the reveal. I see the look in his eyes.
âSold,â says Cash.
The store clerk looks shocked. Iâm not entirely sure why, except that the dress is pricey, and she has just made a major sale. I return to the dressing room and change back.
âDo you work on commission?â I ask discretely as I hand her the dress and the shoes.
The clerk nods quickly, silently and processes the sale.
âYou donât want to look for other shoes?â asks Cash.
I chuckle at his effort to make me think I have choice.
