Paul waited a day before going over to the Rodriguez household. He bought a bouquet of flowers and drove over in the early afternoon on Labor Day.

It was a bright, sunny day, and people in the neighborhood were having barbecues. Three Polynesian families on the block had gathered to play volleyball in the largest front yard, and across the street two black households had gathered to cook burgers and toss a football around.

The Rodriguez house was on the corner and Paul walked solemnly up to the front door, knocking twice. Juliana’s old aunt opened the door and said something in Spanish Paul did not understand. Juliana appeared a few moments later and invited him in.

“You’ll have to excuse my aunt, she does not speak English,” Juliana explained as she brought him a glass of water and then hunted down a vase to put the flowers in. “She flew up from Honduras to help for a few weeks.”

“Speaking of which, is there anything you need from me? Any of the other officers?”

“Boomer’s been by three times already with his wife and son.” Juliana sat down on the couch across from Paul. “Lieutenant Riley and Chief Simpson have both been by, too. Thanks, but I think we’re alright.”

Paul nodded. “I rode with Rod several times when I first joined the force. He took me under my wing when I joined out of the Navy. We weren’t as close the last two years as we were at first, but… I thought very highly of your husband.”

Juliana sniffled and wiped a tear away. “Thank you for that, Paul. He always liked you.”

“What I’m going to tell you is very difficult, especially in light of his death,” Paul continued tactfully. “They want to close the case on Amanda Powell. I’m sure you already know this, but we were serving a search warrant on Armin Bosnadarian’s house to see if there was a possible connection between the two.”

“That man murdered my husband.”

“He did, that is absolutely true. Unfortunately, there’s evidence – strong evidence – that suggests he didn’t murder Amanda Powell.” Paul saw her blank, confused expression. “At least enough to… make us want to keep the case open.”

“Riley said they found her DNA at his house and they found the murder weapon in his house,” Juliana said slowly, as if Paul had cursed her dead husband’s name. She was visibly upset. “What kind of evidence could be stronger than that?”

“The fact that we know where he was at the time of the murder, and that place was over two miles away with eyewitnesses and video footage,” Paul replied courteously. “This isn’t to say that Armin wasn’t involved, because the evidence suggests that he was, but there was somebody else. There had to have been an accomplice.”

“Somebody else who was working with him,” Juliana clarified. She was trembling.

“Exactly.” Paul looked at his feet. “I shot the man who killed your husband, Juliana. I was there. I don’t want this to end… I don’t want to let an accomplice roam free.
