Barrett captures the formula character for the peripatetic heroine portrayed in gothic romances of the period who moves from castle to picturesque cottage.

Despite Barrett’s sexist and condescending portrayal of Cherry, in the early gothic romances the heroine is a strong and resourceful character, determined not to mate with a man she despises. Young women of the period who were often given arranged marriages could no doubt relate to the heroine of the romances. The novels are achingly melodramatic, but the heroine breaks out of the mold of feminine docility in seeking independence and a relationship with a loving and supportive man. Evolutionary biologists would say that such young women readers dreamed of the best possible match for resources, genetic compatibility and kindness; the popularity of the romance genre suggests that many still do.
