Chapter Twenty-One

We had only just walked into a room that I presumed was for leisure, with woven mats strewn around the floor and golden lanterns casting soft light. Someone brought a goblet to the king.

“The sacred wine,” King Aurekdel said, taking a sip and offering it to me. There was only a sip left. I drank it. I had long since given up on worrying about being poisoned. I just couldn’t worry about everything.

“Delicious,” I said. It tasted sort of like smoky honey. I could have had way more.

“Do you harness mists in the above ground?” King Aurekdel asked.

“I presume not,” Forrest said. “I’ve never heard of it.”

“Here we have a number of different mists, vapors and gases that come up from the earth. Some are outright poisonous while others have hallucinogenic and divining effects. This is what lets some mist dragons see the future. One of them, the sessi mist, is even good for language acquisition. If we fill the room with sessi, you will soon find that you can understand us when we speak our own tongue and even after the sessi fades you will still have some awareness of it. After several sessions you’ll be nearly fluent.”

“Ohhh, that’s useful,” I said. “We certainly don’t have anything like that.” I guess the haze I had seen in the other room with the dancing maidens was one of the more drug-like mists.

“Is that the only effect?” Abel asked. He seemed very tense, especially since the existence of his mother was mentioned. I think he trusted the king less than I did. No surprise there.

“It’ll relax you,” the king said. “I’m sorry. You seem like a man who doesn’t enjoy being relaxed, but…it’s worth enduring.”

“I think maybe I’d better abstain. One of us should probably not be compromised.”

“That’ll be me,” Niko said. “They said mist dragons aren’t affected, and I already speak the language.”

Some lady servants were already bringing in two large round containers, sealed at the top. They broke the seals and a very faint haze started wafting out of the openings. They fanned the mist toward us with slow waves of grass fans. Soren and the other guards left the room, leaving us alone with the king.

We started sitting down on the mats. The dragon king was much more comfortable in his layered robes than my guardians in their leathers. I tried to keep my guys close around me. I was kind of worried about all of them for different reasons. Abel had to deal with finding long lost relatives; Niko had to deal with not finding long lost relatives, and Rin seemed distant with grief. I guess Forrest was okay, but I needed him too, because he helped me to be strong.

A sense of heaviness descended over me as the mist wafted out. The room was so nice and warm.

“How is this castle heated?” I murmured, but King Aurekdel was already saying something in his own language. He was sitting up straight, on his heels, while the dragon girls flanked him, waving the fans, swaying back and forth.
