Chapter 13

Tip

The trip to Texas was hell. The heat was stifling, even more so than in Vegas. But I finally made it to San Angelo.

I was expecting a shit town, but the place surprised me. Not only was it a quaint and welcoming town, but the people were open and friendly.

When I stopped at a gas station to fill up, I went inside to pay.

“Do you happen to know where the Packard Ranch is?” I asked the attendant, not really expecting a good answer.

“Oh, sure,” she said with a smile as she pointed back where I’d come from. “You just turn back around that way, hang a left, drive out a few miles and you can’t miss it.”

I thanked her and headed out, eager to finally see this ranch. With Preston gone, who would be running it? And what did they know?

I followed the directions I’d been given and pulled up in front of the ranch. Impressive. Very impressive. The kid sure knew what he was doing. Everything was tidy, well-kept and appealing. The buildings all looked new, well made and probably expensive. In the distance I could see a few sheep frolicking about, but what really caught my eye were the two pick-up trucks parked near the main house.

Turning up the drive, I prepared my speech. As I pulled up behind one of the pick-up trucks, a big beef of a guy came out of the main house. Seconds later another guy came out of the barn and headed my way.

“What can I help you with this morning?” the big beefy guy said.

“Are you Preston?” I said, knowing full well that it wasn’t him.

He shook his head. “The name is Bacon. I’m taking over for a spell.” He looked up as the other guy joined us. “That’s Rick.”

“Nice to meet you fellas,” I said, as jovial as can be.

“So,” Bacon said. “What brings you out to the Packard Ranch?”

“Sheep,” I said. “I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about this place through the grapevine. Best sheep. Special sheep.”

I didn’t know a fucking thing about sheep.

“That’s right,” Rick said. “And we take good care of them. You looking to buy wool, or what?”

I shook my head. “Sheep,” I said again. “I’m thinking of starting my own ranch.”

“Here in Texas?” Bacon said.

“Nope,” I said. “Out in Nevada.”

“Nevada?” he said, his brow creasing.

“Mind if I have a look around?” I said, wanting to avoid too many questions from him.

They looked at each other, then the big guy nodded.

“Sure,” he said, waving me over to follow him. “I’ll show you the place.”

It was hard not to be impressed with the professional look of the place. Everything was surprisingly clean… immaculate even.

“In addition to the sheep, we have a few other farm animals,” Bacon said as he pointed to the barn and the fenced in enclosure on the far side of it.

“You boys must be pretty busy,” I said.

“Good honest work,” he said. He pointed to another building. “We do some shearing there. The boss man likes to give the occasional on-site buyer a real feel for the product.
