Chapter 15

The nurse gently bathed Zappacosta's legs. Her name was Mary Gilmore. She'd had a creditable career in England, highly regarded, multiple certificates to her name, but then she'd found herself in trouble. She'd been working in a hospice, doing her best for her dying patients. But doing her best included helping them to die when they asked, and quite a few did ask. She was charged with murder. It was while she was out on bail that she'd been offered employment on behalf of Zappacosta - excellent conditions, good pay, just one family and their employees to be looked after, around sixty individuals. She'd been assured that a passport was no problem, and that she would not have to worry about possible extradition. That was twenty years before and she'd worked for Zappacosta ever since.

She finished. Zappacosta was looking away as he always did. He hated the sight of his own legs. Mary said, "There is an improvement, I think."

"I hope so. It's been long enough."

"I know you said that you don't want to raise the dosage, but if you're in too much pain..."

"We'll see," said Zappacosta, as she started bandaging.

After a moment, he asked, "How is Angelo?"

"He says his head still feels awful and he prefers the light dimmed. All the same, I think he'll be fine."

"You told me he would have died overnight if he was going to die."

"It's why there's supposed to be a brain scan or at least an X-Ray when there's prolonged unconsciousness. One can't always tell if there's a fracture or maybe a bleed."

"So now?"

"I've told him to keep to his bed for a day or two, and just to take it easy as long as the headaches last."
