CHAPTER 13
ARGUMENTS
Iâm beginning to think the people in Winter Creek all have a tendency to undersell their homes.
First, there was the Coven House. That sucker definitely was more of a manor. And Lucasâs houseâ¦
Itâs a fortress.
Three stories tall, it was surrounded by an iron fence that reached my boobs. The house itself looked like it was made of a dark grey stone, though that might just be the design. Itâs narrow, reaching higher than the trees, with a single widowâs walk wrapping around the uppermost floor.
I almost expect it to have a moat dug in front of it. It doesnât. Like Marieâs manor, it has a grassy knoll for a front yard, with trees bordering it. Because unlike the Coven House, itâs not set on a street. Itâs literally tucked into a clearing just big enough to fit it and have enough of a patch of grass around it to be considered its yard.
Welp. I feel a lot better about staying here now. Maybe the witches will be able to follow the windy path we took to find this placeâand considering how many fallen trees Lucas had to help me over, and closely grown copse of trees I had to wiggle my way through, I doubt itâbut even if they did, this sucker seems like it was built to withstand whatever magic a bonafide witch could throw at it.
As I gape up at it, Lucas falling into a companionable silence a few steps behind me, I canât help but breathe out, âThis is your house? You own this?â
I donât know much about Lucas. Despite the good half an hour it took for us to reach this place, I was lucky if I got about twenty words total out of him. Five of them were: âYou ask too many questionsâ. The rest were simple âyesâ and ânoâ answers to the questions I couldnât keep back.
He canât be that much older than me. I donât even know if he has a job. I highly doubt he works for Bordeaux Designs, and unless rescuing damsels in distress is a paying gigâand he already refused my offer to pay himâthen I canât imagine how the hell he couldâve paid for this⦠this castle.
I shouldâve known better. With my history, I really shouldâve known better than to bring it up.
But I didnât, and I wince when Lucas says, âMy parents did. Theyâre gone now so the house is mine.â
Oof. âMy momâs gone, too.â
He doesnât say anything to that. Iâm kinda glad that he doesnât.
Instead, he raps his palms against the top of the fence. âStay here. Okay? Iâm gonna let everyone know youâre here. They already know, but you probably want to have a few minutes to yourself before you meet everybody.â
Heâs not wrong.
âSure. But, hang onâ¦â Reaching up, I remove the red hood from my head. The cloak itself has a button that clasps in front of my throat. I unsnap it, shrugging it off. Once I have it in hand, I hold it out to Lucas.
