Chapter Fifteen

“Gentlemen!”

The emcee’s loud boom interrupted the few remaining conversations between the men as the last of them made their way through the glass doors of the ballroom onto the terrace.

The morning sun hadn’t been awake long enough to gather force. Cool air caressed my skin.

“The theme of today’s hunt is virgin sacrifices and minotaurs. There’s no actual labyrinth, though—you’ll have to use your imaginations.”

The emcee’s description explained the wide belts and loincloths the men were wearing, but at least their costumes looked more appropriate for running around in the jungle than the long white gowns we’d been given. They had pouches to carry things—we didn’t even have shoes. To keep with the theme, and to make things fair, the men should have had hooves strapped to their feet instead of sturdy gladiator sandals.

“Virgin sacrifices?” one of the men called back. “If any of them were virgins when they got here, they’re not anymore.”

“Thank god none of the men here are hung like minotaurs,” Delilah murmured to me. “I’m sure some come close, but I’ll take well-endowed human over bull-sized dick any day.”

“In the story, didn’t the minotaur eat the virgin sacrifices?”

“If they weren’t supposed to fuck them, why bother giving them virgins?”

“Maybe virgins make for better eating?”

“I doubt any of us are getting eaten today.” She sighed, sounding forlorn. “The best we can hope for is getting bitten once or twice.”

I snorted and shoved her with my shoulder.

“Do you think about minotaur dick a lot?”

“It’s come up. I read a lot of interesting books,” Delilah said with a wink.

Across the terrace, I accidentally met Ajax’s gaze.

The lingering smile on my face was answered by a cunning smile on his. I shivered, wondering what he was thinking about.

“I think those guys want another piece of you.” Delilah nodded subtly to Ajax and Calder. Ajax had looked away, but Calder was staring at me with an intensity that made me blush and avert my gaze.

“What on earth did you do to them?”

“What do you mean?”

“They’re fucking obsessed.”

“They are not—they probably only want the stupid cash prize that comes with catching me today. I think most of the hunters have forgotten about it. If you want to talk about obsession, you should take a look around. You have so many admirers, I think half the terrace is looking this way.”

As I said it, she nodded at a man standing nearby, who was grinning at her.

“No. I just make sure to give the men I fuck a good time. See how pleasant it makes them? They might run me to the ground today, but they’re not going to do me any serious harm.”

She’d explained it often enough, but I didn’t have it in me to follow her lead.

“If that’s true, why are Ilya and Bron still looking at you like starving dogs?”

The two of them were tall, hard and lean, and their unruly hair and long beards gave the impression they didn’t see civilization often. If they weren’t so quiet and standoffish they wouldn’t be as scary.
