Still not finding time to fit in the exercise for big weight loss? Go back to Chapter 2 and reread some of the answers you gave in the quizzes to identify your barriers (and, of course, the answers to overcoming them). Remember, you can do these exercises while you watch TV. You can do them while your baby naps. You can do it. Just remind yourself of all those reasons you really want it.
I’m a big believer in daily affirmations and mantras. Seventy percent of the time we talk to ourselves, we’re saying something negative. I tell my aerobics classes 20times an hour, “You guys are awesome!” It’s like subliminal messaging. They hear it as they are sweating and moving, and it sinks into their subconscious! Take that extra step and jot down why you’re working out and how you’re going to make it happen. Use a positive “I want . . . So I will . . . ” format. For instance:
I want . . .
To ride a bike without feeling out of breath.
So I will . . .
Do a 10-minute cardio interval workout at lunch, and do 10 minutes of strength training after dinner tonight.
I want . . .
To feel proud when I walk into my class reunion this summer.
So I will . . .
Lose weight by doing three Prevention’s Shortcuts workouts and implementing Clean Eating Shortcuts every day for 8 weeks—the amount of time it takes to make a behavior a habit.
Make your “I want . . . So I will . . . ” statements as specific and personal as possible for the best results.

Prevention’s Shortcuts Success Story
“I HAVE LOST 230 POUNDS.”
You read that right. When I started working out, my weight was 396 pounds and I was a size 28. I had tried every diet known to man, but I never exercised and always gained the weight back. As a single mother of two boys, ages 7 and 10, I became afraid that I was on a slow path to death and was going to leave them alone in the world. I woke up one day and decided to make a lifestyle change.
The hardest part was getting started. Now I can’t imagine stopping. I move whenever possible. When I’m watching TV, I get up and do something during every commercial. Even if I have to stay up 15 minutes later or get up 30 minutes earlier, I make sure to work out every day. I make exercising as much a part of my life as I do with brushing my teeth or doing laundry, and I have more energy through my day as a result. I love knowing I will live longer for my boys, and being able to climb stairs without being winded, and being able to keep up with my boys as we ride bikes, play football, or play in the park. The best part is that anyone can do these workouts.
