Chapter Forty-Two

AVA

Dante strolled into my office and stopped in front of my desk. “Have you prepared the second set of dummy accounts?”

I lifted a folder from the desk and handed it to him. “They need your approval.”

He flipped through the documents inside the folder, his unreadable expression giving away nothing. I could never tell what he was thinking. Was he happy with my progress? Did he even appreciate the risks I took to launder money for his family?

Probably not.

He only saw me as his employee, another person who did his family’s bidding. But was that true? I wasn’t sure what to make of my relationship with the Luciano brothers.

Dante set the documents on the desk and removed a felt tip pen from his pocket. He signed off on each transaction. At least I wasn’t the only one who would go down if this didn’t work.

He handed the folder to me. “Send them to the bank, and then meet me outside the laundry entrance.”

“I’ll need about twenty minutes for the bank to approve the transactions.”

Dante left the room without a word.

After dealing with the bank, I took the elevator to the ground floor. The Portofino offered in-house dry-cleaning and laundering for their VIP guests. And as I approached the back of the hotel, I could smell the dry cleaning chemicals.

Dante waited by the door. “Did everything go through with the bank?”

“Yes. All good.”

He swiped his keycard on the digital wall scanner and extended his hand toward the double doors opening for us. I entered the steamy room with his hand on my back.

“Keep moving, Miss Vianello.” His lips were so close to my ear as he bent down, creating tiny bumps along my skin. “Don’t stop until you hit a dead end.”

Gulping down my fear, I swallowed the lump forming at the back of my throat. I hadn’t spent much time alone with Dante. And those few encounters were not that pleasant.

One of those times, he was carving a man’s flesh and using turpentine as an antiseptic to make it hurt more. My limbs trembled thinking about what he would do to my family. He would probably make it the worst pain imaginable until we begged for our deaths.

So I devised a new plan to help us escape the Lucianos. I hoped they would consider forgiving my father’s stupid actions if they got their money back with interest.

After talking with my dad, I felt he would run. The stress was becoming too much for him. He was only thinking about our escape plan. So instead of helping my dad embezzle more money—which would get us killed—I had a better idea.

For the past week, I had been taking cents on the dollar from every dividend check and reinvesting them into global markets. None of our clients would notice a few cents here and there. But after I added it up, I invested over two million dollars into a new account.

Dante had already approved the dummy accounts. So he would be none the wiser when he saw them gaining value.
