Chapter Twelve

Faith told herself not to overthink the kiss she had shared with Dane. It had been a nice little interlude—something they had both wanted at the time. It was a way of acknowledging the physical attraction between them, but it didn’t mean they were going to take things any further. In a way, it had balanced the scales between them—a test that had proved he was willing, at least for now, to let her call the shots. If he had tried to pull her closer when she had ended the kiss, they would have had a different conversation afterward. Instead, he’d given in like a gentleman. For all the mistakes he had made to this point, he definitely had potential.

They loaded his backpack with extra food, water, the topo map, binoculars, a compass, a first-aid kit and extra ammunition. She put the ballistics vest back on and he loaned her a knit cap to pull down over her hair against the night chill. She had her weapon, phone, handcuffs and Maglite. Somewhere in their initial struggle, Dane had ditched her police radio, probably so she couldn’t summon help. Now she hoped they wouldn’t need any.

Guilt nudged at Faith whenever she thought of her fellow officers searching for her. She didn’t want to worry them, but she needed a little more time with Dane to figure all this out. She didn’t completely buy his argument that turning himself in would endanger his life and the life of his daughter, but she wasn’t discounting his fear, either. If TDC had managed to conduct a multinational drug smuggling operation without anyone becoming suspicious, maybe they did have the resources to silence one man who many people already thought of as a dangerous nut.

“Are you ready?” Dane asked after he had shouldered the pack.

“I think so.”

They had a three-mile hike ahead of them to reach the remote pull-off where they had stashed the Ranger Brigade FJ in a dense stand of trees. From there it was an approximate twenty-minute drive on mostly unpaved back roads to the highway, then a short trek to the gated entrance to the exclusive development Terrell had chosen for his local base.

The moon was up by the time they reached the FJ. “I don’t think anyone has been here,” Dane said, pulling branches away from the windshield.

Faith studied the ground around the truck, but everything looked undisturbed. “I’ll show you the way to go,” Dane said, sliding into the passenger seat as she started the engine.

Neither of them said much on the drive out of the park, except when Dane indicated she should turn up ahead. Faith looked out at the moon-washed landscape and willed her body to relax. She recognized that the tension she felt now wasn’t from fear, but from excitement. After so many weeks of spending too much time on mundane tasks behind a desk, she was finally going to be doing something risky and a little dangerous, but nevertheless important. The kind of work she had trained for.
