WHATEVER THEFARIE WAS doing to (hopefully) keep the strixes at bay, there was no telling how long it would last. We needed to move. Carter ran back for Matten as I pushed the door open. Luca backed his way closer to me, facing the strixes he’d spotted in the other room. Matten stumbled his way towards the door—did he have a concussion or something?

“The strixes seems disoriented,” Luca said. “Like they’re not sure which direction to go. We’d better take advantage of it while it lasts.”

But Matten’s condition hindered our ability to rush. I held the door open as Carter helped him keep his balance, the two of them making it outside first. One glance at Luca told me he’d keep guarding our backs until we all made it out, so I stepped out next.

The front of the bus stood maybe a dozen feet away from the door, with Carter and Matten already staggering towards it. A familiar curly mop of hair hovered over the driver’s seat. Tony gave me a wave as the doors popped open—and Cristian hopped out, helping Carter guide Matten inside.

I stepped onboard next, Hayley meeting me at the entrance. The anxiety in her expression gave way to a look of relief. A little further down the spacious passageway, Vegoia—of all people—hovered over a seated Thefarie, while he clenched his temples and trembled, like whatever he was doing actually hurt him. And up at the front, standing behind Tony with a hand on his shoulder while watching Luca climb in behind me...was the Remus. The Remus, whom I’d avoided as much as possible since that awkward incident where his niece tried to kill me.

“I won’t last for much longer,” Thefarie said through gritted teeth.

The bus started to move as soon as the doors closed behind me, placing a layer of glass between us and the strixes outside. Glass that would’ve been designed to withstand a strix assault—buses like these traveled beyond the safety zone often enough to warrant that level of preparation. Which meant we’d finally reached somewhere the strixes couldn’t follow, foiling whoever had slashed our tires...and locking ourselves in with a group of people that—if Cristian was right about this being an inside job—could very well include one of the killers.

Aren’t you being too paranoid? My brother would have wondered. You’re surrounded by witnesses from four unconnected legend Houses. Even if someone here is involved, they can’t try something now. If anything, they probably came here to trick you into thinking they can be trusted.

Or maybe they had the power to do something to us in plain sight without incriminating themselves. That would get them a bus full of witnesses saying they couldn’t have done it.

“Vegoia?” I heard Carter asking. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to see you, but why are you here?”

There was a bashful note in her voice as she answered him. “I don’t know yet, but I know I can help. The lightning gave me the answer, but not the question.
