Chapter Twelve

Later that afternoon…

Barrett tightened the circuit board into the clip before moving it into the panel and closing it. This would hopefully be the last tweak they’d have to do before the mission. He and Rhett had kicked it into gear and gotten the damage fixed. As soon as the panel was level, he reached for the screwdriver he’d left on the floor of the Huey, but his fingers couldn’t seem to find it. Turning his head, he saw Samuel sitting on the edge of the opening, holding the screwdriver aloft.

“Looking for this?”

Barrett took it. “Thanks.” He turned back to screw in the covering before moving to face the human. “What can I do for you?”

“I think I did you and Parker a disservice.”

“Oh?” Just the mention of the human’s name got his blood pumping.

“I was just reminded that another of the elementals didn’t fully control his power until he was mated. Prior to that, keeping you away made sense… I didn’t want him to be hurt. But now… I’m not so sure it’s the best thing for him. Or you.”

Barrett released a steady breath.

“He’s spending the next hour with Sky… practicing in the field to the east,” Samuel said with a grin. “Maybe you need to go introduce yourself.”

Barrett returned the smile, his heart pounding in his chest at the prospect.

“Just promise me that if he goes haywire that you duck and run for cover,” Samuel added before wandering away.

I can do that.

He stared down at the screwdriver in his hand, remembering the feel of electricity coursing through him and the heli. He dropped the screwdriver back into the toolbox before climbing down onto the tarmac. After brushing his suddenly sweaty hands down the back of his BDUs, he paced alongside the Huey, trying to think of what to say.

Hey there… remember me? The guy you hit with a bolt of lightning?

You knocked me off my feet once already. Now it’s my turn.

Damn, that’s corny as hell.

Just go up to him and introduce yourself. Yeah… just say hi and see where it goes…

He forced one foot before the other, his blood pressure rising with every step. He could hear the steady staccato of his heart. Brushing his damp palms on his thighs again as he walked, he kept telling himself this was going to be okay.

It was fate.

Parker was his mate.

Maybe my mate, I mean… I’m not completely certain.

And that thought set off a bunch of other ones.

What if I was wrong? What if he’s not my mate?

That one got him to stop in his tracks.

You won’t know unless you go talk to him. You have to move to do that.

Again, he forced himself along the path. It wasn’t long before he saw the elementals practicing in the field. Even at a distance, it was amazing to watch. Ice, lightning, and the very ground they walked on became weapons. Watching them wield their powers allowed him to focus on something other than what he was about to do.

It wasn’t until he was a few feet from Parker that he felt the familiar twist to his gut return.
