Outside, Myers pulled Sawyer and Shepherd into the empty interview room across the corridor. Shepherd closed the door behind them.

‘Sally fast-tracked the DNA,’ said Myers.

Sawyer nodded. ‘No match.’

‘No match. His DNA isn’t in the database, and it doesn’t match either the blood from Laura Bertrand’s dog bite or the cigarette end we found at the Holt scene. We have literally nothing.’

‘There’s the online contact,’ said Shepherd.

Myers eyed him. ‘That’s as good as nothing, sir. We can’t charge someone with murder on the evidence of contact via an online dating site. The CPS will laugh me off the phone.’

Sawyer closed his eyes. ‘What else?’

‘Sorry?’ said Myers.

‘There’s something else.’

Myers sighed. ‘Whether Nash is the killer or not, he isn’t the person who’s been trying to blackmail us.’

‘We had another message,’ said Sawyer.

Myers nodded. ‘Five minutes ago.’
