CHAPTER 12

Tyr did not like the sensation of “riding” in the Jeep. It felt like a thousand mini-earthquakes were rumbling under his seat.

Metal squealed loudly as Salista “shifted gears.” It sounded more like she was opening the gates of hell. The Jeep lurched, grinding branches under its tires. Salista had found the remnants of a “highway,” although to Tyr it seemed to dip down deeper into the valley.

“We’re making pretty good time,” Salista said with a smile, her hair fluttering behind her. Alex though didn’t seem so happy, clutching the “roll bar” with both hands. “We should be there by nightfall.”

“We can only hope that Vitalis has not acquired what he needed.”

“Trust me, it will be harder to get than Alex led on to believe. The nuclear material is kept behind many metal doors.”

That was the best news that Tyr had heard. Metal was the most resistant to blood magic. Hopefully Vitalis was still stymied by the containment. Tyr could not think of any other outcome. Each was too horrendous to ponder.

“Ah, this brings back memories,” Salista said, waving at the countryside.

“How so?” Alex asked.

“I used to date a guy in Sonoma during junior college,” Salista answered.

“Oh man, you are lucky mom is dead!” Alex responded. “’Cause she would full on kill you! You weren’t supposed to date until after college.”

“Yes, well,” Salista said, glaring at her brother in the rearview mirror, “If we are going to open up the can of ‘supposed to’s I think we know who would win.”

Alex glowered in the backseat, grumbling so quietly Tyr could not hear what he said, however he could guess. Young adults were apparently the same no matter what age you lived in.

Salista glared for a moment longer, perhaps to make sure her brother didn’t retort back, then turned her attention to the road ahead. The “highway” had long ago been buried under dirt and grass, but the general width and flatness had been maintained. The vehicle was traveling so quickly that Tyr had a hard time making out individual trees in the forest that surrounded the road.

It felt unnatural to travel more quickly than a horse could at a full gallop.

Once they crested a small hill, the bay spread out before them.

“Told you we made good time,” Salista smiled wide enough to show her beautiful white teeth. So straight. A rarity in his time.

“Good thing the Bay Bridge is still partially intact.”

As they neared the large structure, partially was the key word. The thing looked ready to fall into the water.

Salista put on the brakes, bringing them to a stop. She hopped out of the conveyance and put her hand to her brow. “Well, at least there isn’t a toll.”

Tyr grinned even though he wasn’t quite sure what she meant, however he could tell from her tone she was being playful. The first time since her mother’s death. He knew how heavily it weighed upon her. Guilt was a familiar feeling for him.

“Well, we’ve got to try,” Salista said to Dyn, who had stepped from the Jeep to join them.
