Chapter 9
Disjointed thoughts and images crisscrossed Tyâs brain as he retraced his route back to the farm. He missed Brynâs presence behind him.
He visualized her slender frame, wide brown eyes and golden hair flying about her face. At first he had not liked having to take the girl he had always considered a nuisance home with him. But during the past week he had grown more comfortable having her around. They had gone from hardly being able to stand one another to something elseâhe wasnât sure what. Friends, he supposed.
At some point he was going to have to deal with these fresh feelings for her. But not now.
He grinned to himself as he recalled her clumsiness at household tasks. But she had given her best effort. He had to admit that she rode a horse with skill. And she seemed to have an aptitude for nursing.
His thoughts traveled backward in time, recalling bits about her family. While the middle sister, Kit, had been quiet and gentle natured, Darcy, the oldest, had been a horsewoman and was usually seen with her friend Jackie Laughton, another excellent rider.
A forgotten incident with his own sister came to mind. Fiona had once suggested to him after a robbery by the Whip and Blade that she thought the masked bandits were Darcy and Jackie. He had laughed at her. But now a picture of Brynâs skill with a knife returned to haunt him. She had looked up to Darcy and tried to emulate her. Could she have learned to ride and use a knife from those two?
More pictures flashed through his mind. Those older girls had been gangly and boyish when they were youngsters, challenging the boys at school when they had races and athletic competitions. But when they grew older, they had become more ladylike in their appearance and actions.
Ty tried to shake the strange feeling that crept over him at the sequence of remembrances. But the more he tried to push them away, the more they plagued himâand made him wonder. His brain seemed to be clickety-clacking right along with the rhythm of Jasperâs hooves on the frozen snow and ice.
It seemed impossible that two gals could have been those bandits. But the more he turned it over in his mind, the more he couldnât let it go. No one was ever robbed but a man named Lester Ogden. No one was ever harmed. Rumor had it that people who had been cheated by Ogden had secretly had money returned to them. The bandits never used guns, only a whip and a knife.
Did Bryn have the kind of skill with a whip that she did with a knife? He didnât know, but deep inside him he suspected she did.
The truth stared him in the face.
Caught up in his ruminations, the familiar crack brought him back to the present with a jolt. When Jasper sank through the hole that opened up in the snow, he got off , tramped a path and led him out.
