What was this master plan, you ask? Well, it wasn’t much. Try coming up with a master plan when every single bone and joint in your body is screaming in searing pain to the point there isn’t enough Tylenol in the world to alleviate it.

The said plan was to stay in my room and wait it out.

It was the best I could come up with. If I didn’t show, hopefully, Jack would get the message and leave. We’d never discussed a vacation or time off. Was I even allowed time off? Who cared? This was me taking it.

I didn’t know what the repercussions from my insubordination would be, but I knew there would be some. It couldn’t be worse than aging fifty years overnight. But then again, maybe it could.

I sat in my chair facing the window, a vial of purple liquid in my right hand and my cell phone in the other as I stared out to the front of the house where the soul collector came to collect me every single night at ten sharp for the past weeks.

I glanced down at my cell phone. “It’s ten past. He’s not here.”

“Has he ever been late?” asked Ronin, sitting on the edge of the bed where Marcus had been sitting a while ago.

I’d sent Marcus home. I was tired of him staring at me like I might suddenly keel over and die. The overwhelming sadness and helplessness had thrown me over the edge. Watching him watching me like that was too much. Not only was it increasingly uncomfortable, but it was also irritating. He would have to get used to me not being around him if my age continued to progress.

“No. He’s always been on time,” I answered, edging forward in my chair and looking out the window again.

“Guess whatever your father planned on doing worked,” offered Iris, standing with her arms crossed next to me. “Maybe this is finally over. Maybe you’re free.”

I shook my head. “It’s not over. It can’t be that simple, but it’s changed. The fact that he’s not here yet means something.”

I’d signed a contract with the soul collector, and the only way to get out of that contract was if I died or if I or someone else offered something better to the demon. I didn’t think another idiot in the world would offer his or her services to him. The said idiot—me.

Iris turned her dark eyes on me. The light in the room cast a shadow on her pretty face. “My offer still stands. If you want to summon Muranda, we can still do it.”

Ronin growled. “Not this again.”

I gave Iris a quick smile. “I know. Let me think about it.” But the more I did, the more it sounded insane. I was in enough trouble dealing with one demon. Adding another one made my insides squirm.

“Think about it like this,” continued Iris. “If your father managed to close the deal with the soul collector, all we have to concentrate on is giving you your youth back.
