"So was the doctor helpful?" Hayes asked, taking the sandwich I offered her after she climbed into the passenger seat of my car. I headed toward the station where, hopefully, forensics reports would be trickling in.
"Yeah." I cleared my throat, trying to keep any hint of humor out of my voice. It wouldn't do to break into nervous laughter while discussing such a disturbing case. "Turns out he knew the vic and his boyfriend." I dug into my pocket for my notepad and passed it over so she could read the notes I'd made after leaving Ben's house. Less uncomfortable than relaying out loud the nature of his relationship with the couple.
"How did you get him to admit all this? Most shrinks I've met are cagey as hell and incredibly good at deflecting direct questions." She sounded impressed and shook her head, food forgotten while she paged through my scribbles.
"Ben's a consultant on the case, so he was already familiar with the evidence from the Kaiser scene. He knew what things I would be asking, and I guess he figured since he was already involved, cooperating was best." I gave a shrug, hoping the fact that she didn't know me well yet would keep her from seeing how lousy a liar I was.
She cocked her head to the side. "You just called him Ben. And I don't care how wise it is, shrinks don't give up more than they have to."
"I called him Ben because he told me to. He was friends with the victim, and since he's got a solid alibi, my guess is he wants this killer caught, same as you and me. He has no reason to evade questioning. Plus, he makes no secret of the fact he's a Dom. His career doesn't depend on him staying quiet about what he does on his own time." Unlike mine.
"Wait, wait, wait," she said, holding the fingers of one hand straight up, the tips stabbing into the flattened palm of the other. "Time out. You already know he's a Dom, so all he had to say was he once played with Adams and Weiss. You got more detail than that, especially considering his interaction with them was four years ago. Why is it relevant to this case how long he played with them?"
"Establishes level of intimacy."
"That he played with them at all points to that. Why does it matter that he received an open invitation to play again?" She was relentless. Jesus.
"Because Robert said they never played with others in the lifestyle, only had threesomes with random strangers."
"No, he said they never played with other subs, because he wouldn't compete. I'm guessing Doms don't like to share their goods with other Doms, so this invitation was something special. If he doesn't tell you about the invitation, he's not required to tell you why he got into their inner relationship sanctum." I didn't correct her assumption that Doms didn't share. I assumed in certain circumstances, from the way Matt Kinney
