Chapter Eight

“King, you with us?” Brick asked him.

King took a swig of his beer and regarded the others at the table. He knew he ought to be paying attention. This next delivery job promised a massive payload. The MC had been planning it for weeks, making sure they didn’t miss anything. After their last job went south and landed King and a few other MC brothers in the hospital, they all agreed this particular job had to be perfect. No shortcuts or cutting corners.

“Yeah, of course, I am,” King answered.

Brick narrowed his eyes at him.

“Razor, go over that section again.”

The club’s sergeant-at-arms nodded and went through the route they were supposed to take. King’s mind drifted. Three days had passed since he allowed Prudence to leave with Axel. King regretted his decision with every passing day. Prudence and he had been texting each other back and forth like teenagers.

That was something. She talked about how she felt like a prisoner in the Chaos Riders compound, how she wished she could go back to her old job and apartment. It was a shitty life in King’s opinion, but he understood her desire. It was a path she’d carved for herself.

“Everyone know their roles? Good. That’s it for today’s meeting,” Brick said.

King gave a nod to everyone in attendance. Brick, Mick—the club’s treasurer, and Razor lingered behind to talk about the club’s accounts for the quarter. King nodded in the right places. Razor and Mick eventually left, leaving Brick alone with him. He had a feeling he knew what Brick would bring up. They might as well have this conversation out in the open.

“Ever since Axel picked up Prudence, you’ve been in a black mood,” Brick said. “Your mind wasn’t even one hundred percent in that meeting.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll do my bit when the time comes,” King said. “When have I ever let this club down?”

“Never,” Brick answered. “Then again, this woman’s different, isn’t she?”

“She’s one in a million,” King agreed.

“Then why let her leave with Axel if you wanted to keep her?” Brick asked.

A good question.

“Sooner or later, she’ll realize she’s better off with me. She’ll come crawling back.”

Truth was, King just didn’t want to admit that Brick was right. Letting her go was one of the stupidest things he’d ever done. He wasn’t afraid of Axel or getting into a fight with the Chaos Riders MC. Axel’s group already had their hands full with the Black Dogs.

Brick let out a snort of disgust. “You and your mind games will eventually get us all in trouble.”

“Prudence is my personal problem. I’ll take care of it,” King said. “And don’t worry about tomorrow. The job will go smoothly this time. Our two neighbors are at each other’s necks too much to pay attention to us.”

“That’s right.” Brick nodded. His best friend clasped his shoulder and gave him a nod. “Get some sleep tonight. Tomorrow’s going to be a long day,” Brick said as he left the room.

King couldn’t argue with that. He decided one drink or a couple wouldn’t hurt before bed, so he headed to the bar.
