Chapter Seventeen - Elisabeth

The cottage was surprisingly enormous compared to its exterior appearance. I considered it to be a trick of the eye, as it seemed double in size inside. The room we walked into was massive, and we were surrounded with bookshelves. Candles flickered with flames in a giant chandelier that hung from the ceiling. There were candles placed in enclosures close to the wall and a fireplace that was brightly lit. The room radiated with soft light.

The chandelier hovered above the mat that we now stood on, showering the room with dull colors; the brightest being maroon. A large coffee table was placed in the middle of the room with a dozen black couches surrounding it. Everyone had claimed a chair, Trish choosing to sit next to Lucas. She played with his hair, laughing at him while he pulled his face away annoyed. “I told you I’d beat you some day. Dad trains me every day,” she said, bragging to him. He grabbed her stroking hand away from his leg, nudging himself further away from her in his chair. She pouted her lips at him childishly. Her eyes flickered black as her father interrupted her angry stare.

“Trish, can you get our guests some tea?” Max waved his hand for Ashley and me to join everyone else on the couches.

“You okay?” Ashley asked me as I flushed red with a built up anger I held for Trish. She had tried to kill us not five minutes ago, but somehow everyone was calm and understanding about that. On top of everything she will not stop touching Lucas, I raged inwardly.

I gave Ashley a harsh stare and then softened my eyes in apology when I remembered my anger was focused on Trish and not Ashley. “I’m fine,” I lied. Trish led Lucas into one of the hallways, nudging him to the side in a playful tease. Lucas gave Kurt an angry glance but Kurt only nodded in return, urging him to go with her. “Trish, keep the door open,” Max ordered, while placing himself between the couches Ashley and I sat on.

Trish giggled to herself. Actually giggled, and left with Lucas strapped to her side.

“Kids these days,” Max mused. I rolled my eyes in disgust and looked over the books that surrounded us.

“I must admit, Max. You have raised her well; she’s a lot more powerful than I expected her to be,” Kurt admitted from where he sat across from Max.

“Of course she is. She’s my daughter,” Max simply said, proud.

A huge bark echoed through the room and a huge flash of grey forced its weight on top of me. I cried out for help before I realized it was a dog that had jumped on me and nothing else. The dog was as big as... a wolf? I questioned, concerned. Its tongue trailed the length of my face with breath that smelt of mince. One eye was blue and the other was brown; its coat was the lightest of grey—almost white.
