Chapter Nineteen- Hunger

After a full day’s wait, and after relighting the fireplace several times — partly because of my nervous energy and partly to keep myself warm as the cold night edged over me — Scott, Paige, and Lucas returned, finally sweeping my anticipation away.

Depleted, they all collapsed around the fire, Scott questioning where Paul was. I indicated his tent with distaste, ashamed that I still felt jealous of Harmony even though she had just healed Paul’s wound, something that I was incapable of doing myself. Scott got up to permanently heal Paul’s wound, putting him out of his discomfort.

Paige took her thick leather boots off, clearly relieved to free her toes. I noticed that blood was splattered across her face. She seemed unfazed by her wild appearance and the small cut along her collarbone that still bled slightly. I turned my attention to Lucas.

“What did you find there?” I asked him.

“Very little. My brother was there, but I can only assume Taskatae somehow tipped him off. I am now very certain that they are working together.”

“It was still okay, there were other Starkorfs we could slaughter anyway. There were dead bodies everywhere, so we can only assume they’ve been hiding there for a while and feasting. It was fun.” Paige smiled wickedly to herself. Her words sickened me and I tried ignoring them, pretending I didn’t hear her.

“While I waited for you I ran into someone who was coming from the same direction. Did you by chance run into Kurt?” I asked, grabbing Lucas’s confused attention, his expression enough to tell me he hadn’t. “Kurt is a traitor, has been from the very beginning. He had a fascination with Aeisha and rambled about finding the Immortal Blades and Sebastian’s grave so he could harness an Elder’s strength. He was speaking like a mad man. Lucas, he was part of the reason why my parents were offered to Taskatae as gifts. He aided your brother in that.”

Lucas swallowed heavily, speechless. He clenched his hard jaw and stroked his hand through his sandy-blonde hair like he always did when he was thinking.

“I didn’t know, Karla,” he said, abashed. “I truly didn’t know. I am so sorry.”

“I could have told you he was a liar years ago,” Scott said, coming out from the tent. “His fascination with the Immortal Blades was what turned my father against him. Because my father wanted them for himself, of course,” Scott said smirking. “Paul’s wound is healed now, lucky for him to be graced with my magical hands, right?” Scott rhetorically asked with a high-pitched laugh. Lucas cringed at the sound and Paige stared at him annoyed before rolling her eyes and walking off.

“I’m going for a walk,” I said. After waiting for them for most of the day, my legs needed stretching. The woodland was beautiful and I couldn’t let the opportunity slip.

“Do you mind if I come with you?” Lucas asked, already standing. Scott arched his eyebrow at me before walking away whistling. Paige had already left.
