Chapter 13

Caroline felt like the character in “The Princess and the Pea,” only it was a wooden stake poking at her through one thin mattress. She knew she was only imagining it, but it felt like the wood dug deeper into her back the longer she laid there till it was imbedded in her spine. Maybe it was trying to give her the backbone she needed to make a move already.

She’d been waiting for the perfect opportunity, but it felt like hours had gone by without anyone coming in. Maybe she needed to make her own opportunity. She thought about banging on the door in hopes that someone would come check on her, but the timing was critical to her success, and she had no idea what time it was. There was no clock or window in the room, and her stress had distorted her sense of time till she couldn’t tell the difference between hours and minutes.

How long had she been there? It felt like days, but she doubted they’d keep her that long. Surely there was a time limit on their offer. After that, they’d kill her and try something different. Serena had already said as much. If she waited for the perfect moment, she might run out of time before it ever arrived.

She had convinced herself to take action but was still working up her nerve when the door swung open, like her thoughts had conjured up a visitor. Caroline gasped and quickly stuck her hand behind her back, hiding the stake she’d been practicing brandishing.

Serena had a plate with another sandwich in one hand and a water bottle in the other. Caroline wasn’t hungry; she was too nervous to think about food. But if Serena was bringing her another meal, it had probably been at least four or five hours since her last visit, maybe even more.

The sun had been out when she went upstairs, but most vampires slept during daylight. The fact that several vampires were awake then meant the sun had probably just risen or was about to set. But Caroline wasn’t sure which. Was it still daylight? The information was crucial to her plan. She decided to see if she could get some answers out of Serena before she made her move.

She slid the stake under the blanket behind her then reached out to take the food and water. “Is it dinnertime already? I can’t keep track of the time in here.”

Serena handed it over. “It’s after dawn. I’m heading to bed, but I thought you might be hungry.”

“Thank you.” Caroline tried not to react to the news, but inside, her body was flooded with endorphins. Sunrise meant most of the vampires would be tired and ready for bed if they weren’t asleep already. There would be less chance of running into one once she got upstairs.

The only problem was, if she went outside, she’d burn up in the sun. Her legs were covered, and she could pull her arms inside her shirt, but her head and feet would be exposed.
