I STAY AT THE CAFÃ until six oâclock and Iâm able to accomplish absolutely nothing. Itâs amazing how time just gets swallowed up when youâre letting your brain turn to jello absorbing pointless facts on the internet. Itâs a drug for sure. They should call it Cybercaine or Webamphetamine or Heronet, or Webjuana, or... nope. Iâm done.
I trudge my way back to my dorm, knowing Iâve only got about five minutes before Trevor is planning on meeting me. Dread sweeps through me again. Iâd rather shave my eyeballs with a blunt razor.
Pushing the button to the fourth floor, I hum into the silence of the elevator, shoving myself away from the wall when the doors open. Slothfully, I glide my way toward my room. Iâm a couple meters away when I pull my gaze up from the carpet and meet a set of emerald eyes. Itâs obvious heâs been watching me slug my way down the hallway, leaving all my courage and security in a trail of slime behind me. Now I stand before him with trembling fingers and a limp heart.
âHey,â he says quietly.
Iâm frozen in place for a moment as I take in his casual stance. Heâs leaning against the wall near my door with arms crossed over his chest and a reserved smile playing at his lips.
âHi,â I respond as I brush past him to unlock the door.
I already know that Mercy is gone because Tuesdays are normally jam-packed with classes for her, and sheâs out late since she has no morning classes on Wednesday.
âCome on in,â I say as I lead the way into my room and flip on the lights. Stepping out of my shoes, I throw myself across my bed and bury my head in my pillow. âReady?â I mumble into the fabric.
He laughs behind me. âI am, yeah.â The bed dips slightly with his weight. âAre you?â
I groan as I roll myself onto my back and peek at him through lazy eyes. He looks so comfortable as he leans against the wall with one leg stretched across the end of the bed and the other dangling off the side.
âReady as Iâll ever be.â I push myself up into a seated position and snag my laptop from my bag. âAll right, Toots Magoots. Letâs do this.â I yawn. All enthusiasm has left the premises.
