Immediately to the north of the Temple of Vespasian, and on the east side of the Forum, stands the Sanctuary of City Lares (24I), one of the most unusual and little-understood buildings in Pompeii. It was originally thought to be built after the age of Augustus but before the earthquake of AD 62. However, recent research has suggested that it was built after the earthquake. The building was built almost square, with an open area surfaced with a pavement of opus sectile, cut marble pieces in a geometric pattern of framed squares and circles (1). In the centre of the pavement stood an altar (2).
