Chapter 9

“Pretty sly of you to leave a note in one of the baskets asking me out,” Donovan said.

“I had a good time the other day. Enjoyed the company.” TJ cleared his throat. “Since I had to return the baskets anyway, I thought it might be nice to hang out together. Figured this place made for a good change.” TJ wiggled his toes, not quite comfortable in the rental shoes which seemed to be a half size too short. The attendant had assured him it was the largest pair they had. With the next biggest being the pair that Donovan presently wore. TJ could only deduce that a small-town bowling alley didn’t see a whole lot of big and tall men. Mentally, he made a note to purchase his own if this became a new hang out.

“I’d say so.” Donovan took another bite of his meal. “Pizza and bowling are always a good combination.” The sound of balls smacking into pins echoed in the background.

Catching a familiar scent, TJ turned to find Jonah stepping into the building.

Donovan must have caught his attention because he turned that direction as well. “The sheriff.”

“Jonah, yeah.”

Donovan focused back on TJ. “That’s one scary dude.”

A bit surprised, TJ studied Donovan. “You’ve met him?”

“Yeah, he showed up at my house just to introduce himself.”

“He’s not normally the sociable type.” TJ wondered if it was the fact that Donovan was another shifter that Jonah made the effort.

“I got that impression.”

TJ grinned. He’d had the same reaction when he met Jonah. Not really afraid, more like respectful and all about staying out of the other man’s space. They’d gotten to know one another over time, which really didn’t change the whole expanded personal space theory in the least. “As long as you’re not a criminal, he won’t bother you.”

“Not worried about that.”

TJ tilted his head. “He’s sane. I can vouch for that.”

Donovan pursed his lips. “Sane has a wide definition.”

“Yeah, it does.” TJ chuckled. “Jonah takes his job seriously, but he shoots from the hip. Nothing sneaky or sly about him. Just in your face.”

“That’s the concerning part. That, and the way he only wears that gun for show.”

“Picked up on that, huh?”

“Yep.”

Jonah approached their table. “Evening.”

“Jonah.” TJ greeted him. “You’ve met Donovan.”

“Uh, huh.” Jonah flicked his attention back to Donovan before returning to TJ. His eyes twinkled as if he just found out a secret.

TJ groaned to himself. “Be nice,” he warned.

“Am I ever otherwise?” Jonah tipped his head and walked off.

Donovan shook his head before leaning in to whisper. “Those tigers. An intense bunch.”

“Known a few?”

“A couple. They even walk like he does. As if nothing, not even Armageddon, can stop him.”

TJ smiled. “It probably couldn’t.”

Donovan sipped his beverage. “You never told me, can you bowl?”

TJ shrugged. “Can, do, and being good are all different things.” He took a swallow of soda to wash the bite of food down.

Donovan grinned. “So, which category do you fall under?”

TJ found himself staring at the slight dimples in Donovan’s cheeks.
